gearing question

I went to check the door tag on the donor truck I bought and it has been painted over. I know it has a 10.25 rear and d60 front. It is a t-19 4 speed. My question is, if this truck has 4.10's can i swap in the 3.55's from my current axles? I have the 10.25 rear and d50 ttb up front. This may be hopefull thinking as I think I remember reading that the d50 and d60 are totally different.

50 has:

8.5" ring gear, 26 spline pinion, 30 spline axles, 10 ring gear bolts

60 has:

9.75" ring gear, 29 spline pinion, 35 spline axles, 12 ring gear bolts

Sorry bud, can't use the gears.

Just Googled this to help you out:

Jack up the front axle and support it with jack stands. Put the transmission in neutral and then rotate the drive shaft by hand. While turning, count the number of drive shaft revolutions required for one revolution of the tire. If the drive shaft turns approximately 3-1/2 times, you have a 3.55 ratio, etc. It may help to use a piece of chalk mark a reference point on both the tire and drive shaft. For increased accuracy it is recommended to rotate the wheels two times and divide the result by two.

Ya I know this method. Where the truck sit right now tho I have no way to jack it up (It is in a buddies yard and it is a steep hill). Guess I will have to wait till this spring when I swap it all out to mine. One way or the other I will have the solid front axle under mine. I was just hoping that I might not have to swap out the rear also.

i would want 4.10's with 37" tires.
this would be an actual gear ratio of 3.51.so just like having stock 3.55's with 235/85's (31.7") on.
if you run the 3.55's with 37" tires your gearing is a low performance gear of 3.04. so like having fords 3.08's.
ok for cruising the highway, but nothing to write home about for a fun toy,or work vehicle.very sluggish compared to 3.55's.
plus don't forget, the big tires are not just taller, raising your gearing, but they rob performance due to their weight as well.
however i just saw the 4 speed,no OD.so all depends on what you use it for i guess.

Bigger tires can help you crawl up those slick rocks, look cool, and rob you of power.

this reminds me,i wounder if oero finally got his 5.?? gears in yet! man i can't wait to hear what he thinks of;if i recall correctly close to 3.73's with his monster meats.

I guess that the 4.10's would be nice, but till I get the torque splitter I would miss this sudden increase in mileage I have due to the tires and the 3.55's I have right now lol.

4.10's are good with the 37's. thats where i was getting 16.7mpg average pulling the 2 car. any larger in tire size and you wanna go lower gear.

In the Bronco, I can't see huge weight being hauled or towed.

No overdrive tranny, I still vote for the 3.55 gears.

It is going to be a pay the parts man now or pay the fuel man over time kind of thing.

You are right on the hauling part Dave, and the most I have towed is about Is around 16000# ( pulling water tanks). But even if these axles are 4.10's they are going under my baby. I really hate the way the ttb wears tires and the d60 will be a better axle for the plow.

you'd basically have 3.04 gearing then.
pretty much like having fords 3.08's.
for primary highway use, that's what id run for gearing in my truck too.but compared to lower gearing for working,towing/hauling heavy,on rural roads, there's nothing better than 3.73-4.10 gearing (or even lower) when it comes time to pull a load like ya mean it off the line,or up the hills.gearing multiplies torque.
that's why the F-super duty trucks (F450) use such steep gearing,to match their payloads.
then again if i wasn't towing or hauling anything often,id be running a small car with 30 or so MPGs and leaving the truck home in those cases.saving loads of cash even with extra car costs.
kinda best to have a truck and a car today.leave the truck setup like a truck, and use the car for when a car is all thats needed.that or just be willing to pay the fuel if it makes ya happy.ya can't take it with ya they say.
just remember, the taller the vehicle, and wider and heavier the tire, not only do you have a less performance gear ratio, but more rolling resistance, and more wind drag.so expect fuel economy to kinda balance out,or get worse.

Well I was able to remove the paint on the door jam sticker and it says it has 4.10's. Also as usaul I get lucky and it has the limited slip! Guess I will be running 4.10's this spring. Since we will be eventually moving further south into more hilly terrian they may be helpful.
