I've got an 85 F150 and I was recently given a rebuilt 406 out of a 76 F250 looks like the engine mounts fit but the 85's 351 has eletrical starting and the 76's 406 uses a duraspark system can this engine still be used in my 85?
Or did you do a typo and mean 460? I swithched my 351 to a "75 460 and all I did was change the distributer from the 351 to the 460. I know they have different part #'s but it worked.

If you had a 351m, yes it will match a 460. If he has the original 351 in his 85, then it's going to be a "w" motor and the bellhousing won't match.
Correct the tranny from the 351W won't interchange to a 460, but the distributer from the 351W will work in a 460, that's all I did to my ignition system, the swap was a LOT more work than that. My truck is an 86 F150 4X4.
ok so it sounds like it might be a 460 i will check and see if it is a bored out 400 or not but I dont think so, however your saying that this wont fit the tranny?... not sure I understand
If you are looking for another engine for your 85, and it's the original type 351w, then the only engines that will bolt up to your bellhousing you have now are;
351w or 5.8
302 or 5.0
300 six cylinder (requires different frame brackets)
an old 289
a 351c (never offered in these type trucks, and requires some fab work)
