Lincoln 406 FE

Anybody ever put a 406 FE in a truck? Do the 406 and 360/390 share any of the same components? I have only seen the 406 in mid 60's Lincolns...

boomer, There was a recent ebay auction of a truck that claimed to have a 406 in it. The 406 was a Nascar race engine with a few put into production to make it work for stock car racing. I don't know the total but there were never many built. All of the FEs with the exception of the side oiler look the same from the outside, or so is my understanding.

My dad had an early Galaxie with a 406 in it. He also put one in a 65 Mustang coupe (had to put a straight axle from an Econoline van to make it fit).
The 406 looks like any other FE from the outside, except for the cross bolts in the side of the block.

You may want to do a little more research on this one.. I think the 406 Lincoln is from the MEL engine family, similar but not related to the FE. Finding any new parts may be an issue.

The 406 is an Fe

It is a center oiler with a 428 bore and 390 stroke. The 410 is a 390 bore with a 428 stroke. Some were used in Nascar, only the last few were crossbolted. If you have a 352 360 or 390 it will bolt in, if the motor mounts will bolt up.

Further research- The 406 is indeed an FE from the 62-63 production year. If you find one, and it's cheap, grab it! It will probably only have two bolt bosses in the motor for your motor mounts, but that's not a big deal.

Mike, First off there were only hundreds build not thousands, and if you were to run across one, I wouldn't look for cheep at the same time. IMHO

Reason I asked is I know where one is. A neighbor pulled a 406 out of a 63 lincoln to put in a Merc...project never really got off the ground - both the Merc and the Lincoln have been sitting for almost a year with the motors in the garage....I may have to pay him a visit and see if he would be willing to part with the 406.

A quick check of the number of valve cover bolts will clear this up. If it's got 5 it is an FE.

Thanx for the info - I'll check it out. I didn't even know there was a 406 FE...when I was talking to the guy he was the one that told me it was a 406. But he did say that he is not a Ford guy...just happened to end up with the Lincoln and the Merc.

The Lincoln engine is different from the FE 406, and will not swap without the tranny.

So if it turns out the motor out of the Lincoln is a 430 then I should just stick to my 390....
