R12 Compressor upgrade!

I am changing to a March pulley system on my 460 BB and I need to replace my R12 system Ford York piston compressor with a Sanden rotary compressor. My question is, on the York, I found info that the output was 163cc or 110.0 cid and the more common Sanden 508 has 138cc or 8.39 cid. I also found a Sanden 709 that has 154cc or 9.36. Should I find a replacement compressor that matches the original York output or does it matter? I would think it does matter to keep the system in peak performance. Please, need advice.

Depends on the pulley size for one. If the compressor turns at a higher rpm, (smaller pulley) within limits, it can match the output you get from the York. Yorks are, from my memory anyway, driven with rather large sized pulleys, some with a big flywheel style pulley to smooth out the vibration. If you get a Sanden that is rated for higher rpm, or that is similar in style and capacity to the rotary compressors found in late model trucks, you should be able to use it with no problem. Look at what size/capacity is specified for the later trucks, and match that...

The Sanden/Seltec compressors have more than enough capacity to handle your underdash or factory AC system. Upgrade rthe condenser and change the drier and any old stiff hoses.

Good info, hhot71, what type of upgrade are you talking about on the condensor, that was one of the total upgrade plans I had and I would like the best available. Are you talking about crossflow or something like that for R134 or increasing size. It is pretty big already for it is in a truck with the original 460 engine. Please advise. I will also look into the pulley size on the March system using a Sanden compared to the original size and output!

Your condenser is from 1979?
A newer parallel flow, aluminum etc condenser would help.
The internal passages are smaller and there are more of them, enhancing heat transfer.

But big and old condensers can work well too, just keep the air flow up.
