AC Compressor Swap??

Ok, before anyone jumps on me, yes I did search. I just couldn't find the answer to my specific question. My old York compressor is an absolute pig, like everyone with air in these trucks is fully aware. The vibration drives me nuts, and the drag on my engine drives me completely insane. On the upside the AC is cold as ice. That all said, I've been reading up on the Sanden compressor swaps and my question is this: if I get the compressor and the adapter bracket I don't need anything else? I currently have fully functional AC, and plan to retain it as R12 because it cools much better than 134. Anyone that has done this do you have any more insight into the process? I'm under the impression it kinda goes like this:

- Take truck to AC shop to have system evacuated
- Bring truck home, remove York compressor and rig up as a boat anchor
- Install adapter bracket for Sanden compressor
- Install Sanden compressor to bracket
- Hook original hoses to Sanden compressor
- Drive truck to shop and have system charged with R12.
- Profit??

Is there anything I'm missing? Will the original factory hoses hook right up to the Sanden? Any info would be great!

Joe

I think a Sanden SD510 will work, and some had the same ac ports, so the hoses theoretically would connect.

If the York is working it is worth much more as a replacement compressor than it is as a boat anchor. They are a bit old tech.

Ray, I don't know how much they could possibly be worth. You can get them virtually everywhere, but I may look into rebuilding it and selling on evilbay to recoup some of the conversion money.

Anyone else have any insight?

I dont make it east very much, but if you are ever in central Oklahoma Id take the boat anchor off your hands for a few bucks. Wouldnt bother with shipping on it, but you never know, some people travel for work.

I've got two of these sitting here in the shed, both bad. I know the RV and 4x4 guys liked to convert them into onboard air compressors.

Lowrider guys with air bag suspensions like to use them for air compressors too.

when I had the 302 in my 79, I used all the brackets and compressor from a donor 83 f150. I used my stock hoses and one hose from the 83 to tie it all together. I had a low pressure valve welded onto the a/c block. The valve with the blue cap in the picture.
