Fan Belt

I've just finished replacing the timing chain cover and harmonic balancer on my 1990 F-250 5.8L EFI. The last step is putting on the fan belt. It won't fit. Something must have moved while I had the front apart. I know how the tensioner works. How do you put this thing on?

At max tension it is about two inches from the alternator pulley's edge

find a picture of it in your manual.

it is real easy not to remember how it goes.

I don't have a manual but I have it right. Is there anything that is adjustable other than the tensioner?

ah, ok.

than why does it not go on?

go to the library and look up belt routing on alldata.

i never understand why people who work on vehicles do so with no manual.

i am getting ready to work on my explorer, i have the factory manuals, haynes, chiltons and all the needed printouts from alldata.

My most humble apologies. I thought there was only one way to put the belt on. There are two and being obiedient to Murphy's law I had it on wrong. It is now on and I am ready to turn the key. Thanks for the prod.

when i did a water pump on my 4.9 it was apart long enough for me to forget how to get the tenioner to work.

looked at the diagram and all was well.

glad that my experience helped you.
