My wife fired up our 03 7.3L Excursion today and there was a cat in the engine.
The serpentine belt was destroyed and 3 fins on the fan were broke.
I bought both parts today but have not been able to get the old fan out.
No matter which way I turn the fan nut the clutch spins. I can not get the old fan out. So I figured it was doing this because I didn't have a belt on.
I put the new belt on but still can not get the nut off to remove the fan/shround assembly.
What in the world am I doing wrong?
You can either rent the tool at Autozone or Kragens that will allow you to remove the nut, or do like a lot of us have done when changing the water pump: With the belt on, take a pipe wrench, secure it on the nut making sure the handle is pointed straight up, then hit it hard (and fast) with a hammer to break the nut loose. Once the nut is loose, it's easy to remove.
Watch Maintain's vid on water pump removal. You can see the tool needed if you don't wanna do it the shade-tree way.

Removal and Installation
Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding in this section.
Remove the three bolts and position the degas bottle out of the way.
Squeeze the clamp, pull the hose off and position the upper radiator hose out of the way.
CAUTION: The large clutch assembly nut has a right-hand thread and must be rotated counterclockwise to remove it.
Using the special tool, remove the fan and fan clutch from the coolant pump pulley.
Carefully position the fan and the fan clutch into the shroud.

PS - You know someone was gonna ask...and the cat??
That is a good idea and the "special tool" usually doesn't work too good. I have also had luck hitting the edge of the nut with a air chisel to break it loose.

I also used an air chisel. Nut was off in a few seconds....
The pipe wrench trick works. Three hits with a hammer and mine was free. Use the largest pipe wrench you can squeeze in there. I did this when changing the original water pump at 143,000 miles and it spun free easily.
