Well here is our problem... My place of work just recently purchased a new used truck, a 2002 F-250 with the 5.4... the truck had no bed on it when we bought it because we are swapping our old utility bed onto this truck... Well there are two wire harnesses coming to the back, one with several smaller wires and the other with some smaller wires and a couple of larger gauge ones... I need to know which ones do what so that i can wire up the lights on our utility bed... I do not want to have to cut the whole end off just to get to some of the wires if i do not have to....
Also we have a 2000 F350 with the 7.3 powerstroke... which was also just a chassis cab when we bought it would the harness there be the same so i could just look at it and see which wires control what on the lights?
They should be the same with the exception of the bigger wires. One is for the tail lights on the bed. The other is for the receiver hitch plug(trailer) thats the one with the bigger wires. You should be able to get a plug that will plug into the bed socket to wire your lights. The wire colors should be the same.
Well thats the problem the old harness on the bed was all cut up and bypassed by other wires and the lights are grounded to the bed(that was all done before i came to work there)... each light except for the back up lights(which were never wired up) have three wires to them one is for the tail one if for the stop/turn/hazard and one is for the ground... but who ever did it before me used black wires on it all
Brown=running lights for both sides + license plate lights
lightgreen/orange=left brake/turn
orange/lightblue=right brake/turn
black/pink=reverse lights both sides
If the other harness was a trailer tow harness, it will have seperate fuses and relays up front, and the wires will be the following;
black/lightgreen=trailer reverse lamps
brown/white=trailer running lights
darkblue=trailer electric brakes-this is just a wire laying in the harness, with the other end taped up under the dash. You hook this to a brake controller that you buy seperately.
red=battery hot wire for any power use you need, has a 30 amp fuse in the box under the dash
thanks guys... i finally figured it all out... i had to borrow a multi meter but i got it done and it all works good... Thanks for the info on the brake controller because we will have to put one on because we have a sewer clean out machine that is made onto a big trailer and when hauling about 800 gallons of water plus the weight of everything else on there it may not be a bad idea(granted that is one reason we have the F-350, but in case it is ever down for repairs).
Fords are not noted for their over abundance of braking power, even on a f350. So I would hook the brakes up, even for it. It will make it legal too. Don't want to be in an accident and get caught not having the proper equipment.
Yea i have noticed that when pulling it with out 350... But as far as being legal though... when ya work for the local Govt...(in my case the city)... you have to work with what they give ya and let them take the fall when something goes wrong because of improper equipment...
