my '97 f-super duty has a swapped in zf5 (by me). i need to rig up some back up lights to pass inspection.
-does anyone know a part number for the correct rev light switch for a zf5? i think mine is an '89, but i really dont know.
-the switch thats in it now does not produce continuity between the two wires that are in the plug, no matter what position the shifter is in
-when the transmission is put in reverse, does the switch connect a power (12v) or a ground circuit to make the lights come on?
the truck has a utility bed on it, so there is not much "factory type" wiring behind the cab, so i am just going to make my own rev light harness; i just need to get a good switch first.
May not be your switch. I had a similar problem with my M5OD. Come to find out when I took of my switch I saw where a rod was supposed to be. When I put the trans in reverse, a cam or something in the trans would push on a rod that actuates the switch. I just ground down an old bolt to make a replacement rod and voila!
You should have 12v to the switch with the key on. When the trans is in reverse, it sends power to the reverse lights, then they ground after the bulbs.

awesome, that what i need to know.
when i look up a switch for a '97 f350 w/a zf5, napa points me this one: NAPA AUTO PARTS
it says its for a 4spd? i was unaware there were 4spds used in trucks of that year. it also says its will fit aerostar vans and econoline vans; i did not know those ever used manuals? Am i over thinking this?
