460 pulling motor

Hey, I got a 460 that I am going to modify for truck pulling. I am wondering if anyone had a good idea as to what cam to run in it. I am going to run the stock heads but with a good port and polish job and bigger valves. Maybe even go with the 514 stroker kit. thanks.

What do you want the motor to do? What kind of rpm's do you wanna turn? What kind of motor rules do you have to go buy? It takes a good combo of parts working together to have a GOOD motor. I can give you good advice for a 460-472 motor but I don't have any experience with the big motors.

Well, I would like to run around 5,000 rpms and still make some pretty good torque. The rules are very vague so about anything goes as long as it looks fairly stock on the outside.

Is this a strictly pulling truck or will it still see the street? What kind of heads (casting number). You really need to decide on CI before you worry about CAM.

This will be a pulling truck only, the only time it will be on the street is if you cant trailer it into the fair. The motor has th d0ve a2a heads. For right now i am going to keep it at 460 ci.

I think for what you want to do and for a basicly stock motor a Lunati Voo Doo 61601 or 61602 would work good. I have put together two motors for guys around here in the stock class and used the 61602 and they run good and turn 5,500-5,800 down the track. Here's a link.

You should cleanup the exhaust port, remove the big bump on the roof and just smooth things up in the bowl area. Theres no need to make the ports bigger. You could put 2.19 intake valves and 1.75 exhaust valves in place of the stock valves. The motors that I used the VooDoo cam in still have stock valves. They were both built on a TIGHT budget.

before telling you comp ratio you need to make sure what ype of gas is allowed in the class you want to run, some places don't allow race gas in certian classes which will realistically limit you to around 10:1 max with good very good tuning, or I would say no more than 9.5:1, if you can run 100LL then push for 10.5:1 if you can and want to run race gas you could push 12:1 if you want
