mainly to keep dirt and gunk form getting into the torque converter and transmission. it is also a shim for spacing, so you can't leave it off as you will have no where to bolt up the starter.
not sure if they are the same or not, but they should be seeing as both share the same bell housing pattern and transmission. the only thing that might be different is the flywheels size that might change the location of the starter hole in the plate, but i don't think this is correct seeing that the bolt holes are in the tranny case and that doesn't change.
if i was a betting man, i would say they are the same.
