"Acetylene tanks should always be stored upright. While not particularly dangerous, placing a tank in a horizontal position can cause liquid acetone to get into the cylinder valve, causing the torch to operate erratically. Place it upright for at least 30 minutes before operating the torch. It is also very important not to withdraw acetylene from the tank at a rate of more than 1/7th of the normal full capacity of the cylinder. Again, this will cause acetone to be drawn into the cylinder valve."
Mabey not an explosion, but serious flare up..
The acetone separates out while the tanks are lating down, so then the raw acetone gets into the hoses, which will eat them away, to the point they rupture, then things can get pretty interesting...
He may be getting away with it for now, but it is a fair bet he will have it catch up with him... I can't say I have never done it, but it isn't the method of choice... Also, as mentioned it can let some of the liquid into the hoses and regulator, but that typically is more of an issue with propane, but can happen with a full bottle. The way the tanks are designed, the acetone can eascape when laying down, and acetone is what keeps the acetylene semi- stable.
What's really fun is when the acetone gets out of the torch- usually results in ***** of fire rolling around on what you are cutting. You should let the tank stand for 30-45 minutes before using if it is laid down.
Also, acetylene is only at about 250-300psi max, so the risk of the bottle taking off is a lot less than on oxy bottles.
Oh absolutly. How do you think we get our crawfish back to a boil so quickley down here ? Turn the propane bottle upside down and draw the liquid out. Can you say instant turbo charged?
that has to make for some interesting parties... yikes!
Not to mention anyone who has a "hot rod" burner knows to use a grease fitting with the ball knocked out. 15psi from a fisher regulator and your safe as can be. With a single orfice, if the liquid is too much it will "blow" out the flame, rather than spill liquid fire ***** everywhere.
