ford 9 inch axle

i have the 1994 f150 with the 8.8 inch rear axle. i recently lowered it a bit along with my cuzins truck. HIs is a 2000 f150. i saw that his truck comes with the 9 inch axle and from what ive heard it is much stronger than the 8.8 inch. Does anyone know if the axle from his truck might fit mine with not too much custon work. if it does, his truck is still on jack stands so ill trade him real quick before he notices...lol!

Haha wow that is AWFUL. But no, I have heard that the 9" does not fit without some heavy modification. I'm pretty sure that the sterling 10.25 is a direct swap but that means you'll need to carry 2 spares (one with 5 lugs and one with 8).

2000 would not have a 9" stock. Ford stopped those in the late '80s.

9 inch isn't that much stronger than an 8.8 unless you are racing. 9" gives you the easy swap out due to drop out carrier, but I do not think you will find it to be a "he'll never notice--swap it while he makes a beer run" propostion.

For info on both go here:

the 8.8 is fine for a lowered mild motor truck . Yes a 9" is basically bullet proof but . according to post no one has found a reliable kit for the speed sensor on rear end .(you speedo is electric. ) My friends have tried several kits that are out there but with the rough rides of these trucks they don't hold up.

The new trucks have the 8.8 also . If you do find a kit let us know

ohhhhh ok!!! i looked at teh sticker on his door and saw i was reading it wrong, he has the 8.8 inch but he has a different final drive ration. And yea im using it for racing, not full track but i would like to have a good 400hp tops on a 351 with a vortech. just want to bea able to beat the hemi...too many around the hood. So does anyone know what rear end the 03 lightning has, some guy was claiming to have a 9 inch in it. Also i wanted to see if anyone had a 3.73 rear ratio. How does this affect gas mileage if u guys know. thanks alot for the help!!! I think iam the only one with a 94 that went low instead of off road. Sweet!!!!!

The 97-up trucks with a 5.4 V8 (lightning included) used a 9 3/4" rear end (sterling, like the 10 1/4" and later 10 1/2" used in the heavier trucks), while the V6 and 4.6 V8 used the 8.8. As far as swapping the 9 3/4" into the 94 truck, I don't know how easy that would be. The wheel lug pattern is different, but I have no idea about the spring perches or shock mounts or anything like that. I would think that they are different, but don't know that for sure.

A properly equipped and maintained 8.8" can handle that kind of power and then some. The 1/4 mile mustang boys, and plenty of Generation 1 Lighning owners are turning 11 second 1/4 times on these axles.

I doubt your setup would grenade the rear end if you don't neglect it. It would be cheaper for you to upgrade to an aggressive LS or locker and weld the axles. Run good fluid and your 5.8 and Vortech will work just fine with the 8.8.

Yea im the type of guy that prefers quality over price. im gona be running my truck only at the track but i dont make a habit of abusing it.and i plan to rebuild the rear end soon with a locker of some sort so it will be well prepaired for the power. Thanks to everyone who posted any comments....i guess my cuzin will be keeping his axle!!!!

The wheel bolt pattern on the axles are different between the two, but other than that, I'm not sure what will swap and what will not. If everything else matches, you can just have the discs re-drilled for the correct pattern.

if the axle flange are same (as some explores are) You could try if had parts (hey you have a truck to look at thats just as good. ) The back set may be wrong . As for the rotors you get em redrilled . I know you can use newer parts but its a mix and Match of parts /cables to get to work . I'd get a junk rear and try to fab on to save down time. As for swapping newer axle in you could get axles redrilled (or if using after market wheels mix and match bolt patterns, I have no idea what spring mount would line up if at all. Later
