Axle size

hey guys, i have a 1988 f150 4x4 with 3.55 gears, do i have an 8.8 or a 9 inch axle, and how do i go about knowing which one i do?

I'm almost positive you have a 8.8" . One easy way to tell is if you have a differential cover that faces the rear of the truck. There should also be a tag on one of the cover bolts that has a bunch of numbers and letters on it that identifies the axle.

You have an 8.8, the 9" was not used past about 1980. There should also be a decal on the drivers door pillar where you'll find axle codes.

I've had 2 82 f150s with 9" in them. but your 88 would deffinately have an 8.8
