Transmission replacement?

I have no reason to believe my trans. will go out, other than the 114k it has on it and the fact that it is from the “mechanical diode” era. But for some reason I've got this sneaking suspicion that during my Minneapolis Minnesota to Orlando Florida (and back) drive in Sept that something just might…

I’ve read a bit on this forum about Brian’s Truck Service (BTS) rebuilds as well as Factory Tech’s. FT has loads of specifics on there site while BTS has very little. FT comes in right around $3800 w/ 18 month warranty (P&L) while BTS is $3900 w/ 2 year warranty (parts only?).

I’m wondering if any of you have specific experience with either of these options, or can recommend something else. I really want to have all of my ducks in a row so that if something does go wrong the research is already done, and the call amounts to “Do it! Here’s the shipping address.’

I am a BTS fan and have owned one of his "special" bulletproof builds of the 4r100

That said, unless you NEED a bullet proof rebuild WITH the "special" attantion to shift points and presures you might considef these facts:

All people that rebuild the 4r100 these days always put in the newer superior parts
Local rebuild saves the shipping fo the new unit to you and the core back to them
I have heard of local rebuilds as low as $1800 as long as the donor unit is not already trashed

Jet, FT, and BTS all have proprietary things they do the the valves and shift body that are not realy needed in a stock power train...most of their customers are PSD on steroids in the 600~800 HP range

Brian (BTS) builds a mean tranny!
He was a sponsor of mine during my racing career!

Brian stands behind his transmissions! I have known him to rebuild and upgrade unts long after the warranty period for the price of the parts..and at that point he gives an additional 2 year warranty!

BTW, my application is a 650 RWHP Lightning with the 4R100

I'm encouraged by what I have heard, and what I am hearing about BTS. My big problem there is that he "schedules" his builds and is a month out as of now. So, if I run into a problem on the road, I don't have a chance of salvaging my vacation with a BTS trans.

As I said..Brian is a stand-up guy and he will do whatever it takes to make customers happy.

He always went out of his away to help me and others I know. He would service my trans with same day service.

I am sure if you told him you were on vacation and needed it right away he would jump right on it!

I can't imagine you having a problem with a BTS trans...but if you were using it in some very abusive conditions...Brian would tell you to pull it and send it to him every couple of years for a refresh..I think around 1500.00...good insurance and it extends the warranty aswell!

I can't say that BTS trannys are completely bullet-proof...lol..I broke one once.
I seized up the rear-end on launch and it ofcourse locked up the entire drivetrain...
I snapped the Crio'd mainshaft in-half and also damaged the planetary and housing/case!!

Brain was concerned when I told him...obviously this was not something that would normally be covered under warranty..but he wanted to see what happened as he had never had anyone do this before..
He said send it and he would get right on it.
I had it back at the end of that week with a brand new case, planetary and mainshaft...he also updated the clutches and bands while he had it apart.
The only cost to me was shipping (next day) and the case, as there is a core charge on the case!!

What I have done in the past is to remove the tranny when it started showing signs that it mite be getting tired and had it rebuilt. If it was a good tranny I wanted my old unit back not one thats been shelled and then built. I also replace the converter with a new one and not a rebuilt, I think that the new lockup converters are the weak link in the tranny and the first thing to go and take the rest of it with it.
