Guys
Im getting ready to reassemble my engine here with those rebuilt heads. I was wondering, has anyone did gasket matching? How much do you gring off the ports in the head to match the gaskets? Is there a website that anyone can recommend?
thanks
Regards
Ben
Ben, I learned my gasket matching from my boss at the machine shop. But if your heads are already assembled it is too late- unless you want to disassemble and wash everything then reassaemble. What heads do you have, and what gaskets are you trying to match them too ? DF

I have the D2EA heads and I have the fel-pro gasket set. I seen somewhere where guys place the manifold gasket on the head and trace around the manifold with a marker and then grind some port area away. I heard that this increases flow and HP. However, I dont want to grind too much off or mess up my heads. Any tips??

Hey Ben, try [link:www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/DCForumID12/1183.html|this thread]. Should give you plenty of good info!
You couldn't be more correct Barry. I went to the junkyard and picked up a junk D2 head and drilled holes in one of the intake ports and there is next to nothing on the floor. There is absolutely no advantage to grinding on the floor of an FE head as it really doesn't see moving air anyway. Concentrate on the bowl area and the top of the port.

Im not talking about porting INTO the bowl area. What Im referring to is placing the intake gasket on the head and matching port sizes. Ive always wondered why the intake port on the head is much smaller than the opening on the intake gasket. Maybe Im wrong here, but when someone gasket matches a head per se, dont they make sure that the intake port size is the same size as the gasket opening? Please correct me if im mistaken. I dont want to mess up a perfectly good set of rebuilt heads. I checked out the links in the above posts and they were helpful. I cant remember which one it was but it illustrates what Im talking about! Thanks again for all your help!
regards
Ben
I see what you are saying now. THe felpro 1247 gaskets are port matched exactly to the edelbrock heads if this is any help. I have seen some gaskets you don't want to use for gasket matching. There just isn't enough meat. Hope this helps. I would use the 1247. Especially if you are going to use the RPM intake.
FWIW, I used the felpro 1247 gasket as a template to match up my C7AE-A, C8AE-H, and D2TE-AA heads and my Blue Thunder 427MR intake manifold. On the floor of the ports, just make sure it is fairly smooth, without a bunch of casting trash on it. If it doesn't go quite all the way to the bottom of the gasket opening thats okay, most of the flow is higher up in the port. DF
