They're different.

I'm assuming you have a C6.

One option you have is to find a small block C6 trans, or a C4, and swap it in with your 351W. They can be had pretty cheap on Craigslist, and are cheap and easy to rebuild if they need to be. Also they perform very well, and are very durable transmissions.

Another option, is to swap in an AOD overdrive tranny behind your 351W. That would cost a little bit more, but if you drive on the highway a lot, or have low rearend gears, it can be worth it.

or, swap in any number of Manual gearboxes,

OR! The most practical, easiest, most boring way, just Fix the 390...

Block transmission pattern is different and engine perches are different.

C-4 would almost be better. They are lighter weight, take less power to drive. They can be built to handle over 1,000hp so they are plenty strong.

I used to have one in my truck. And I still would, but I went AOD.

Small block E4OD would work. But they're electronic.

Whitepos72, Any reason not to replace the head gasket and keep it going?

It uses the c4/c6 mount, and it should work with your existing driveshaft. (My c4 was the same overall length) but the mount and crossmember need to be moved a little more than 2" back on the frame.

Jowilker im still looking at pros and cons of the swap and fixing the head gasket but im probally gonna put the 351 in because its just sitting around and should make around 450hp as opposed to my 200 ish 390 plus it weighs less and is easier to get parts for

You might be happier with that engine in a car.
