lifter break in

OK, installed my used cam with very little time on it. Its a solid lifter cam and switching over the hyd valvetrain to solid lifter system with adj rockers and new heavyer springs, double spring I believe. When I break in the lifters do I need to just use one spring or can I get by using the double spring just to break in lifters?

It's generally recommended to breakin a cam with a lower spring rate. Most people, including myself, don't do this. The more radical the cam, the more this becomes necessary....given all the issues with flat tappet cams and lifters these days I believe I'd go with the one spring.

Good Luck

hmmmmm....I don't have an answer for you. I believe the breakin has a lot more to do with the cam than the lifters and if your cam is used then you don't need to do the breakin....however I'm guessing on this...someone else needs to elighten us both.

I think to be safe I'd still treat it as it's new. New lifters are convex and will wear to the pattern of the old cam as they spin. There is also some hardening that happens over time that raises rockwell as the pattern spreads out with new cam and lifters. With some of the oils that are on the market today you need to be careful. And I'd also use a break-in additive and some assy prelube just to be safe. Are your springs true dual coil with a damper?.... or a coil with a damper spring inside? Call me cautious on this one.

Inspect the new lifter bottoms too, this has been the cause of more than a few of the failures lately------bad lifters.

It's a good idea to, but some have gotten away with not doing it. One look at the dumbell lifters was enough for me to pull the galley plugs and install restrictors on the 68 427 I had.
