I would keep the cat on & just ram the guts out of it. I took the cat off my 94 with a 460 & put 18 inch 2 1/2 in diameter glass pack that exit between the cab 7 te rear tire. It is WAY too loud. You can not drive with passenger wndow down. Get some thumbs up though!
I never noticed it was two different threads before...hmmmmm does this mean I can't go commando anymore or does my underwear filter my methane fumes?(god help you all in my presence)As opposed to blowing out a cat, if you blow out your undershorts...you've got bigger problems. Now now ladies.....have some tea and crumpets.
The cat also makes a great resonating chamber if you do this. I know this because I used to build exhausts. One time we run 3 1/2 dual exh. into 5 1/2 strait stacks way too loud! Set off car and bank alarms.
From what I understand the 50 Series Flowmasters were originally designed to be used with vehicles without cats, that's why the muffler has a third chamber (called a tuning chamber). If you are retaining you cats (performance, stock, or otherwise) the 40 series is the way to go. Also, the larger the pipe diameter, the louder it gets. Just my two cents, I have a 7.3 Diesel in my F250, and the turbo quiets it down so much I'm considering removing the Banks muffler and straight piping it, and my truck never had a cat to begin with.
Well, I put true duals on my '87 with stock manifolds and 30" cherry bomb glasspacks, and it is loud, also I learned that a good set of tips will change the sound. You might want to just go ahead and get a whole new exhaust done, and try to keep the pipes as STRAIGHT as possible if you want loud. Removing your cat completely is a much better path, because I had gutted cats on mine, then I went ahead and removed them after one got a hole in it, and it definatly made it sound better.
