Hey guys i just threw a Flowmaster 50 series on the truck and well im quite dissapointed...Little rumble at idle other than that is sounds exactly the same.
Even when i fired it up after i cut the stock muffler off it wasnt very loud, could have left it that way. I dont want anything super loud just wanted the tone from the flowmaster.
Should i cut out the cat? We dont have emmissions where i live so thats not a problem. Will it hurt the motor at all?
Im sure itll free up the flow and make it a bit louder right?
Won't hurt a thing to remove the cat......Just make sure your O2 sensor stays in.
The 50 is a quieter series muffler than the 40 Flows but they designed it so you wouldn't have the vibration inside at various RPMS. 40's are much louder and cause that.
I thought the 40 would be too loud...actualy my wife thought it would be too loud...so i got the 50 but it just aint cutting it...i even brought her out and started it with no muffler to show her even that wasnt very loud..time to get the 3" catback and the 40 series...i wish i could return the 50 damnit
Your wife should hear my burnt out glasspacks when i start up or punch it on the road............she'd be happy with your dual flows. Remember if you take the cat off......it is louder......even the 50......you might be happy with it.
you could just leave it on there. I got a 2" pipe that fits perfectly inside the cat, and I just pounded it on in there with a hammer. The cat is still there but it does absolutely nothing. I got a glasspack exiting in front of the tire and I like it a lot but it's really not that loud. No muffler makes it sound like a bunch of air rushing out. I'm happy with my setup
I hear what your saying TrevorP my 96 has original cats and no muffler at all. still very quiet. I think it just shows how restrictive the factory system is.

How did you do this without creating more blockage? The inside of the cat is filled with honeycomb shaped material. If you hammered in a pipe it would just cut the honeycomb and fill the new pipe with the same material, much like pressing a pipe down into a pile of sand.
my truck has two cats right? one with a sensor at the y-pipe and then one about a foot down the line
It has a little rumble when your slowly goin around the parking lot then when you gun it it sounds the same but just a loud rush of air out the tail pipe..I cant decide what to do...guy at the parts store was suprised at the quietness
I have a Super40 and it's too loud for me, but I have a complete aftermarket exhaust with a 3" magnaflow cat. The stock cats are the problem, if you want loud they have to go. I'm ordering a 50 series to replace the Super40, I can't even hear the stereo at HWY speed, just a deep hollow DROOOOOONE. Givin' me a headache.
i have a 96 f250 with a 351w and i had everything cut off from the o2 sensor back and had it replaced with 2.5in pipe, no cat, and dual 40 series flowmasters. so its a true dual exhaust and it is loud but only when you step on it. and on the freeway it has a real nice low grawl but its not overpowering my stero at all. also i noticed a huge difference in power and about 2-3 more mpg. i am very pleased with my set up
fuel milage is def something im goin for...truck kills me at the pump...
and for some reason runs like crap on 87 octane...gotta spring for the 3 cents more 89lol..seems to run better for sure though..never tried anything higher though..also would like to ad a cold air intake but im getting married next month and i have a baby on the way...and need to get my other vehicle back on the road..so the mods are limited to cheap-o stuff right now..
didnt get a chance to get to the cat today but maybe tomorow after work.
Maybe when im done the thing will do a burnout..hopefully
try and to a brakestand and it usualy just pushes the front tires, maybe i have too much traction or just not enough power who knows...did a decent one the other night when the road was a bit slick and i was uphill a little
but i dont want to smoke off my expensive tires..
cant afford new ones for sure
Your factory airbox is basically a cold air intake. I'd leave the factory setup, or you could do your own custom cold air. But don't waste the money on "cold air kits". If you want to lower your intake air temp you could wrap your intake tubes with a thermal wrap. There's quite a selection in what you can use as a wrap. But you should toss the paper filter & get something a little better, like an "airhog" or something.
I doubt you will like it with the cat cutout and keeping the 50 series. My truck didnt have the cat when I bought it and it had the 50 series and the only time I heard it was before switching from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th gear. It had a throaty sound then, but after that it was qiuet as a mouse. It really sucks now that it has a cat on it I cant hear it all.
