Can I Cut This Out?

The crossmember that sits below the cab, I'm gonna guess some kind of transmission crossmember or just a support member, but whenever I lower the truck that cross member hangs below the frame and hits the ground. I have a Heidts cross member for my suspension, do I need that old cross member or can I cut it out?

You will hear different theories on this but I have mine out, but I also have a Volare style front end welded in and the frame rails boxed to the cab ears.

I have a hard time believing that the crossmember is hitting the ground, but the oil pan and other bits aren't also?

If you take that x member out I would try to install another one somewhere close by because if you look at it's placement it is directly below the forward cab mounts which have a lot of twisting leverage on the frame and that x member helps prevent that twisting when the cab bounces up and down on the mount ears.

Just my thoughts. Gary

Check your States Vehicle Code for "Scrub Lines" - It's about stuff hanging below a certain level
Also frame structure was placed for More that hanging engines and transmissions - They involve the whole geometry and support of the vehicle

You will need it (or some other type of cross member) to support the tail of your transmission. Also, if your brake pedal come out of the floorboards you will need to move your master cylinder to the firewall or somewhere else.

When in doubt cut it out.

I think that is exactly the thought process of the previous owner of my truck.

I cut out the center section of the F1 transmission support crossmember. Leaving both sides attached to the frame. The left side still supports the brake pedal and the new master cylinder/booster. The cut was just wide enough to clear the TH400 trans by an inch on each side. The new brake booster has additional brackets that attach to the frame. I kept the cut out section, just in case I decide to go back to a flathead in the future. The new transmission crossmember is behind the old one about 8" and ties the frame together again.

Not the best pic, but you can get the idea.

Another pic. The trans tail section is blocking the view of the cut crossmember, but you can see the brake mounting.
