Imagine a pea size cracked that was caused by a piece of gravel 5 years ago. Didn't think it would develop into anything since it was so small. Imagine it being the size of a quarter about a month ago, ok maybe cause for concern, and get in your truck a week later and it has developed into a 13" crack. Thought it wouldn't develop huh? Well, the feeling is sickening, as if god is trying to send you messages about procrastination at least once a month. Anyways when I call around I'm being told to replace my windshield because the crack is bigger than 6". I believe them because 1. I'm young and 2. It does from an angle look to be warped. Any advice? I called my insurance people and they said $260 for replacement. Thought I'd do some shopping so I called the dealer. They have people do their windshields and they told me $195 and they'd come to my house. Who knows, but if any of you have a dime sized crack in your windshield that you don't will amount to anything, I would reconsider. Reason why anything wasn't done was because of the belief of a deductable payment. I only have liability.

Reason: typo
I am looking at replacing my windsheild as well. The lowest price I could find in these parts is $300. The way my crack happened is about 2 years ago, I was on a job and a hose blew off of a manifold and the camlock connection on the end of the hose hit my windsheild, just left of the center. It left a half moon chip out of the glass but it never did crack or leak so I never worried about it. About 3 months ago, a rock hit just in the right place I guess, but right as it hit, two cracks shot out from that chip that was made 2 years ago and extends across the windsheild. Par for the course I guess, I work in an area where rocks are being tossed around left and right and for all the rocks that have done hit it I figure I had it comming eventually. I am not going to have it replaced until it is due for inspection because nothing would hurt my feelings worse than to pay to have it replaced and than have a rock hit it again and crack the new one before I have the chance to have it inspected.
you cant always fix them, but when you do get a spot or small crack you need to go to Auto Zone within a week or so and get the window kit. Fill the crack and hole with their epoxy and let it dry overnight. It only takes 15 minutes to do the job, and cost $10. That can save a lot of windows. The repair normally fixes about 90% of the damage visually and does help the appearance. ---- works good, normally a permanent fix.
Call Bachman Auto Glass ( 877-922-7488 ) and see if they have a mobile replacement unit in your area. They're a national company so they might. The guy that does all of my glass work comes out of Charlotte. He put a windshield in my 98 F150 a couple of months ago for $140.00 , a Ford script windshield.
I had to replace the windshield in my 01 Lightning a year or two ago. I jacked up the left front wheels and heard it pop, just didn't know what it was until a few days later when I drove it. It cost $180 and they came to my house and did it in my garage. It is a Ford windshield and they even took the time to find one with the exact same markings the old one had. Actually, they did it twice because there was a scratch in the first one.
I had a small pea size divit in the windshield on my '88 F-150. Been there for over ten years, never got bigger. Finally got tired of all the little scratches/dings from the dump trucks running up and down the highway. I used Safelite in Tulsa. It was also around the $170.00.
My son had a frontier. Got hit in the lower corner with a rock. Next day it grew to a 12"+ crack.
guy I work with also got a rock in the lower corner of his silverado. It quickly grew to 6" and there it stays. That has been a couple months now.
Alright pros check this out: (56k beware) http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1423/...0d1b89aa_b.jpg
Thats the crack. Not pretty. What's wierd and concerns me is this: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1189/...09b728875c.jpg
It's an antenna that came with the truck when it was purchased at 60,000 miles that has a cable running across the top of the windshield towards the drivers.
I don't know if it has any relation to this: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1269/...315b2afeaf.jpg
which is under the drivers side back seat.
Heres one more pic: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1009/...c78688d32e.jpg
It's the antenna from the inside + the crack. The thing under the seat has never been used and I'm thinking it goes to the antenna on the windshield. If it's not functional, I'll get rid of it but I don't know how the guy doing the repair is going to react. Anyone ever see these before?
$195 isn't terrible, the last few I have gotten have been right around $150 and they come to me and install Ford windshields. One thing is to not go through the insurance, it will only make the windshield cost more and screw with your rates. Once I have a windshield crack I replace it, I at times get chips fixed but not always. Windshield life expectancy around here is usually only 1-2 years.

I tried that repair stuff, just got a whole lot worse
It had just happened, just a dime size chip on the passenger side, under the wiper. I got the window repair kit and put the truck in the shade for a couple hours, because the instructions said not to use in direct sun. I hosed down the truck, just to be safe and cool it off. Sure enough on the first pull of the syringe/plunger thing the crack spread up and out right to the middle of the glass. I'm in south TX, there's only two kinds of weather, hot and HOT!
Man im glad I live in South Carolina. I had the same thing happen last fall but only on the highway following a dump truck. The truck dropped a stone and it hit the pass. side corner and only made a small chip. Well with the changing temps at night it cracked about 12 inches after a few days of driving. Here in SC you get one windshield a year for free if you have it in your insurance. So all i had to do was call them and it was fixed the next day. I didnt even see the bill and I got to pick who I wanted to do it.
I just had mine replaced. The cheapest I found around here is $220 with a lifetime warranty. I think I will start replacing these things as routine maitnance. After 225,000 miles of bugs, grime and smears it is almost like not having a window in front of you when you drive now.
