Windshield Replacement

Alright guys, I have had enough of the cracked windshield. I am finally going to break down and buy a new one. And no, I'm not turning it into my insurance nor do I plan to.

I started by looking up a bunch of glass companies on the yellow pages. I called a few that had 800 numbers since its Sunday and nobody else is open. One of the ones I called was Safelite. Considering they have an 800 number and ask for your zip code when you call, I assume they are nation wide.

Well anyways, they have a deal running between now and Easter. I can get an aftermarket windshield replacement+installation for $170! The Ford OEM replacement is $236.

I was really impressed by their prices. Another company I called wanted $286 for just the aftermarket.

So my questions are :

1. has anyone dealt with Safelite specifically or who have you dealt with
and
2. what do we think about aftermarekt windshields vs. OEM. The person on the phone told me that they are identical minus the Ford logo and theirs has a lifetime warranty, but that could be just to sell their product.

I install windshields but all Ive ever put in was Carlite and PPG. You are having a professional shop install it right ??

What do you suggest as far as brands, can you really tell which is superior or is a windshield a windshield

I sorta prefer PPG, they always seem to fit the best, and just sorta look a little nicer to me. As far as cracking, I couldnt really say, its hard to tell. But I think most of them are probly about the same. I dont think Ive heard of Safelite.

I didnt gather much info about them, safelite is the company. They can either install the "aftermarekt" one they offer or the Ford OEM one. I didnt think to ask what brand the aftermarket one is.

Safelite is good. I have always gotten glass from them. They quoted me $150 to replace mine. Price must be different in you neck of the woods, cuz it's not a sale compared to the pricing I got.

Word of advice, make sure the installer properly seals it. I didn't check this when we replaced the windshield in my wife's mustang and the wind noise was horrendous, but it was outside the 30 days by the time I found out.

i'd make sure there is some sort of leak warranty because at work we have windsheilds replaced all the time and they will fix any leak that happens the company we use is express auto glass i think its only a local company

My personal opinion is that I will never buy another after-market windshield. I ran my factory windshield for 198,000 miles, had it replaced by a local shop a little less than a year ago with a cheap after-market "xyg" brand windshield. After 11 months and about 30,000 miles the xyg windshield looks worse than the factory one did. No leaks, but any little pebble puts a star in the glass.

Cheap is exactly what I got.

I just recently replaced mine with an OEM Carlite w/ the "Super Duty" on the top. I paid a premium for it, but it's the only way to go. I've heard negative things about the aftermarket glass, and I just assume to do it right the first time...my $.02
