3rd windshield in a year...

Do you guys have this problem too? I just had the guy out again, this is my third windshield since last summer. I've never had such poor luck. He called them "stress cracks" (they've all happened off-roading). Only good thing is that they aren't costing me anything. The company doing it is Safelite which is a reputable company...but I'm wondering if part of it has to do with the quality of their glass. I dunno, I imagine everybody uses the same stuff. Just curious if any of you guys have run into problems keeping your glass in one piece too...

I have the same problem, but it stems from a different source- bad luck I just seem to have the luck of always breaking windshields. I average about 1 every year and a half. That is since I turned 16. I guess it is just my thing, like some people get flat tires. The only real problem I had was that this last time my ins. co. gave me fits and said I wasn't covered. I have paid them thousands over the years, so to me the couple hundred I have cost them in windshields is a good investment on their part. Still, they weren't very accomodating. I hate insurance! I am now spun up. I have a headache Thanks

That's crazy Pro! How hard do you have to be hitting stuff to create stress cracks in your windshield? I don't beat my truck up as bad as you but have still give it a fair amount of grief and have never had that happen. Did you ever get stress cracks before you tipped it on the side? I'm just wondering if the crinkle has things out of square enough to be causing this problem. The seal on the Ford windshields has a pretty good amount of give to it. I was pulling a dash panel off a junked truck last month and needed the windshield out to get to a couple screws. It took a lot of work to get that windshield to crack and then I finally took the hammer to it.

Wonder if Hoxiii can manage to get his windshield to stress crack???

Speakin of people who have different problems and who like to get flats, one of my friends MOMs got 16 flats in a year 3 or 4 or something like that were blowouts. That would suck for us offroaders running expensive tires (which Im not yet ). Although itd be harder to get a nail to make it all the way throught the tread on a bogger, imagine 16 boggers in a year!

sorry for the randomness

I hit it pretty freaking hard sometimes. I think I'm mellowing in my old age though...or maybe the cost of replacing everything is wearing on me! But now you've got me thinking. The problem didn't used to be this bad. Funny thing is, the installer asked me at one point if I'd had it on its lid because the cab was so tight, almost like it was compressed somewhat. I haven't had it on its lid, but maybe I did do something to the geometry when I rolled it over.

Oh well, as long as they're replacing it at no cost to you. I don't bother replacing cracked winshields on my car with the miles I drive . . . just figure that's a good way to get it broken again.

Plexi scratches far too easy. Lexan would hold up well but would be big $$ and very hard to get the right curvature and cut to fit these trucks. Oh, and it's not legal on the street as it's not DOT approved . . . not that I think Pro really cares. If I had a flat windshield, like a Jeep or a Zuk I'd go to Lexan. You buy a sheet and cut it just like a piece of wood. It's tough as hell.

I wheeled a 78 bronco for like 1.5 years with real glass windshield after it was rolled a couple times. Managed to squeeze in a real shield and it never cracked for the next year. then I junked the bronco.

Why dont you try something other than glass? I have seen a company that makes polymer windshields......cant remember their name though.

I saw on TV once that the replacement windshields those company's use are not as good. I don't remember exactly why but I do remember the glass is not as sturdy for some reason.that really sux breaking that many of them even if they are covered its still a pain.

heres a link to some info on replacement windshields.

That's why I drive an EB. Nice, flat windshield. Not that the original frame is even there anymore...I just use a piece of 1/4 plexi. Doing pretty good, too, except for it's warped real bad. Ah, the joys of 4 wheeling...

Interesting article Fordpickmeup, thanks for the link. Yea, I'm envious of Mo' and the rest of the guys with the eb's flat windshield. Lexan rules...although I remember there is some other company that is putting out something better than lexan too...
