Turbo Boost

Hey guys. I'm kind of new to the PSD world, and I was wondering if there was any way to get the turbo to kick in sooner.

welcome to FTE..do you have a boost and pyro gauge??? going over 25lb of boost is hard on the turbo..un hooking the red hose from the boost canister on top of the turbo and pluging it on the IC hose clamp stud will make it boost faster but you will set the ses light and posably defuel the truck...

Actually Ron, my logic tells me that unplugging the red line will not make it spool faster, due to the fact that the wastegate is closed and stays closed until 5-10psi. The only way to make it spool faster is to add more fuel, IE a chip of some sort.

i thought about that after the fact..thanks ..it does make more boost ? right?

Yes once the turbo is spooled, that modification will prevent the wastegate from opening under air pressure, it will open under it's own spring pressure when the exhaust pressure forces the valve open. That should net you a few more pounds of boost, but on a stock truck, it shouldn't be a problem for overboosting.

Alan told me the WG opens at idle, so there will be a short amount of time that it's open when your first step on it. I didn't know that before, but I could swear it spooled faster disconnected and didn't really know why. I think it does make a difference (spooling and definitely adds boost) -- so mine is off and will stay that way.

The wastegate is closed at anything usually below 5psi. And with it unplugged it is somewhere around 40psi of back pressure (20 pounds boost)

Wastegate controll pressure and boost while realated are not the same. the WGCS regulates boost pressure bled up to between 5 - 8 psi by either dumping it out the green line WG Closed or by directing it to the red line and pressurizing the canister opening the WG. the WG should fully open between 5 -8 psi of WGCS pressure but at idle ithe WGCS is at 99% duty cycle allowing pressure to get to the canister, while not enuff to fully open the WG can open and dump pressure

Okay, so at 5-8psi *on the red line* (not 5-8psi of actual boost) the wastegate is fully open. I think that's lending to some confusion here...

But at idle there's not enough pressure in the intake manifold to overcome the spring pressure of the wastegate actuator, even if the control solenoid is stuck in a closed position.

The following is an overview of how I think the wastegate control system works. The red line has a T connection to another nipple that hooks to the intake manifold, so that the red line contains the boost pressure that's present in the intake manifold. As the boost level increases it's applied to the actuator via the red line, and this works against the spring pressure to cause the actuator rod to extend (get longer) and this opens the wastegate in the hot side of the turbo to limit the boost. The green line runs from the control solenoid to a fitting on the rubber intake boot to the turbo inlet, and when the PCM opens the control solenoid boost air is bled from the actuator through the control solenoid and back to the turbo inlet. This action allows the spring pressure to overcome that from the red line, and shortens the actuator rod to close the wastegate and increase boost.

These two above actions (red line increasing pressure & green line decreasing it) are used to control the boost as follows. The PCM pulses the solenoid to control the actuator using a so-called "bang-bang" feedback control system. Bang, solenoid is wide open, and bang, its shut! The PCM is trying to adjust the wastegate by varying the duty cycle of the bangs until it sees the MAP reading that it expects to see for the given engine load. If the control solenoid sticks closed and doesn't open, it can't vent the boost to the actuator and you'll have abnormally low boost. If the control solenoid sticks open, all the boost to the actuator is vented and you'll have abnormally high boost, this is the same as removing the red line from the actuator. I'm pretty sure I remember from trouble shooting mine that the "fail safe" is to have the control solenoid in the closed position. That means that if you have a bad connection to it, or the PCM isn't sending the pulses to it, it will stay closed resulting in low boost.

The best way to get bottom end is with the edge juice /w attitude and on the low boost fueling setting gets rid of bottom end lag. I just sold my edge juice and am waiting for my DPtuner, i hope i am not dissapointed
