Turbo removal

Any tips for removing and installing a turbo? Getting ready to do the ebpv and pedestal delete. Was wondering is it best to put turbo and pedestal back on as one piece or should I bolt the pedestal down first and the put the turbo on?

Swivels and wobbles are your friend. It has to come out and go in as 1 assembly.

Yes, the pedestal has to be attached to the turbo for installation. don't forget new o-rings.

I used the instructions here ... TikiWiki : Turbo removal 1994.5-1997 PowerStrokes

Once the turbo - pedestal if off check the collector to up pipes as the donuts will probably loose seal. You can put new donuts in or bite the bullet and get some bellowed up pipes and be done with it. Wish I had done that when my turbo was off.

Took me 1.5 days to get the turbo out but with ebpv pedestal delete only took me about 1 hour to reinstall.

I've taken mine out before by splitting them after the exhaust bolts used a 10mm ratchet wrench for the 4 bolts holding the turbo to the pedestal was pretty easy that way

Edit : or was it 5/16. Can't remember now

You will find the passenger side bolt difficult to get a socket on because you hit the flange on the turbo. It won't help you with the first removal but grind a bevel in the flange on the turbo before you reinstall it. Makes getting the bolt back in much easier and the next removal easier too.
