Hey guys, i have a early build 99 superduty, and i am getting a max of 12 pounds of boost. I have a Phantom auto meter gauge and 12 is all im getting.
I have noticed the truck is getting slower and slower??? WHAT NOW??? I yesterday ordered a DP tuner and i have a screwed turbo.....REAL COOL.....YEAH.....RACER...anyway, what should i do, get a new stock turbo or go to a upgraded??? What is the best for a 7.3??? that sucks bigtime i am feeling sick. Is there any difference in turbos if it is a early build superduty?
you must have a boost leak somewhere
check all your IC boots and Y-pipe boots
also where the turbo meets the Y-pipe
If, after checking these out, and they are not your issue, check out Black Widow Diesel's pricing on a drop-in Turbonetics unit. Should be around $1500 with some modest upgrades like ceramic coating. Call them and ask, I don't know much about the early to late '99 turbo differences........
I just up dated my early turbo to a stock 99.5 turbo and see lower exhaust temps..not much on power gains..your gains will be when you up grade the HPOP.. then more gains upgrading injectors..in my sig is a link exploded view of a 7.3...in that link is the different in early to late 99..you can see what is involved in upgrading...before you go buy a new turbo..pull the air intake tube from the turbo and reach in grab the wheel and try to wiggle it up and down side to side then push it in and out and see if you have any play..that wheel should be nice and tight with no play at all..very little up and down is ok but no in and out will be ok..the wheel should be clean with nice sharp smooth edges..if that is ok then move on to all boots and spider connections..should be all tight and clean..
In addition to what Ron just said, check your entire exhaust system. The turbo requires exhaust pressure to drive the wheel and if it's leaking anywhere, then it's not going through the turbo.
Before you install the DP and possibly blow your turbo and damage the engine, pull the rubber boot to the turbo inlet, grab hold of the compressor wheel, and check to make sure the bearing isn't shot, which will be evident by excessive end and side play.
In addition to checking for leaks, read my post #11 here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/641265-turbo-boost.html and check your wastegate control system for a stuck control solenoid or bad connections from it to the PCM. If you pull the red line and do a test run, and get the normal 18 psi boost under max acceleration, it's not a leak, but rather a problem with the wastegate control system.
Okay here we go. I just got in the garage, been in it all day. I checked every connection and they were all good. Except one thing. On the right side downtube for the turbo to the intercooler, was riding up against the power steering pump and well it wore a hole. The hole was 1/2 big. So i pulled off the downtube and got the hole welded back up and re-installed the turbo. Figured everything would be cool. Only gained 3 psi. That is a start. So now i am at 14-15 psi redlined at 15 psi.
I dont have the edge juice with attitude on the truck anymore and the DP is here on monday, But i still have my superchips program in there at the 110 setting and all i am getting is 15 psi????????...........That does not sound right. Honestly how much power am i making at the 15 psi i am getting??
A few months back i took off the black boot to my turbo and looked at the wheel and the edges of it were a little bit chipped up. Do i need a new turbo??? Do i need a new wheel?? How is my exhaust wheel going to be??? What is the next step??
And i forgot to add i have the red line disconnected to the wastegate and have had it off for a few weeks. Also could my wastegate be stuck even if the line is disconnected
And also what kind of turbo should my truck have in it for stock on the early 99, there is a garrett in there now.
Stock turbo is a garrett. Does it use oil or blow bluish smoke? Have you checked the turbo shaft for play? How bad is the chipping on the impellar wheel? How many miles on the truck? If the fuel pump is not up to the task you'll never get past the lower boost numbers.
It uses a little bit of oil, and no i have not checked the turbo shaft for play and there is 297000 km and the chipping is not good and the wheel has a dull feel (the blades are not sharp) so do you think the 297000 is screwing me up?

So you have about 185k miles on the clock if my math is correct. Do you live in Canada? I assume as much. How does it start in the winter? If that is fine, your compression is likely fine too.
That kind of mileage is not screwing you but your turbo bears some serious inspecting. Your tranny is also on that list. The engine is most likely fine. Your injectors are also getting long in the tooth but a good CC test along with a buzz test will verify their condition. There has been many PSDs with many more miles on the injectors than yours.
