I wouldn't be towing anything larger than a bass boat from your bumper. You should have or need to get a good receiver hitch.

The sticker with the hitch ratings is on the hitch just below the bumper.
All Excursions come with an OEM V-5 hitch.

The V10 is hard to modify because of parts availability and it's configuration is odd.

The 5.4L 2V is heavily supported and can easilly surpass the oem torque output of a V10 if your willing to spend some cash.

For about $3000 trick flow will send a set of heads and new cams ground to do what you want and that package will add about 100 hp to motor.

Or you could drop in a 2V 5.4 lightning supercharged motor with 380 hp and 450 ft lbs. With very little modifications.

I have a 2003 Excursion XLT 5.4 4x4 with 122k miles. It is silver with a gray cloth interior. It runs and drives awesome. Is it a rocket ship, no, but it runs and drives awesome. If interested shoot me a mesage.

v10 or 5.4 EXCURSION good and bad

This thread, and ford trucks, has been very helpful. My neighbor is selling their 5.4L excursion but before this forum, all I have seen on other websites is how terrible the 5.4l is or underrated it is for the excursion. This is the first time I am hearing positive about it. What is the reason for hate against the 5.4 in the excursion?

Nothing more than it being the smallest engine offered.

You will no doubt find similar mess for say the base non-turbo v6 gas engines in the F150. They’re obviously not going to outperform the 3.5 Eco, but they’re more than adequate for the right task.

Underrated is a relative term. Depending on what your're using it for, the 5.4 might be the perfect motor for you (likely a low buy in too). I put almost 200,000 miles on my '01 Expedition / 5.4 2Valve with zero issues, just normal maintenance and a few coils. It's one of the reasons I bought the V10 I have now. So much in common.

Where the "hate" might come in is the lower tow ratings and power off-the-line, but if it fits your needs, the 5.4 will get you from point A to point B with no issue.

Thanks for the reply guys. I will be using the excursion as my weekend warrior driving the family around. It's only me, my wife, and son...but now we will have room for grand parents as we go on family excursions...lol also be used to get the odd things from lowes and as a third vehicle when our daily are in the shop...however I feel it will quickly become my daily over my fusion.

How many miles on it?

Has it had any major work done?

Sounds like it will be good for your intentions, but don't expect a rocket ship.
