Trans question

A while back i purchase a 2000 excursion with the 5.4 v8. Just the other day the trans went bad. I found a replacement trans out of a 2001 excursion 6.8 v10. My question is will this trans be a direct fit onto my truck? If yes do i use the torque converter for the 5.4 or the one for the 6.8? Thanks in advance for your help

If both trucks are 4x4 or both trucks are 4x2 it will be a direct fit. The torque converter in your old transmission is contaminated with debris from the transmission failure. If you put that converter on the new trans it will destroy it. Use the converter that came with the trans.

IIRC, tear it completely apart and replace the output shaft, swap the tail cone from your blown trans over to replace the transfer case adapter, and that should be it. That output shaft is not something a novice should undertake IMO...

You have not posted enough information for us to answer either "yes" or "no" for you, but Mark provided the necessary information for you to ascertain if the transmissions are interchangeable. Right now, given the info provided by you, you are the only one able to answer your question.

To state it a tad differently to help you understand, if both trucks are 4x4, then the transmissions will work. If both trucks are 2-wheel drive, then the transmission will work. That means if one is 4x4 and the other is 4x2, then they will NOT work.

Honestly bud, look at your question. You haven't provided enough information for us to answer either way. Mark has however given you all the info you need to figure out the answer, all you need to do is apply the supplied info it to your situation.

If both trucks are 4x4 or both trucks are 4x2 it will be a direct fit, it will bolt in with no modifications. If one is a 4x4 and one is not, then no, it isn't going to work. Find another.

For future reference Mark, was I correct with the output shaft needing swapping? I'm very familiar with Jeep and old Chevy trans but not so much on the 4R100. Just don't want to lead people astray, and you've caught my mistakes before.

Yes, you're correct. The output shaft would have to be swapped to change between a 4x2 and a 4X4. That takes a complete teardown of the transmission.
