So, I got a chance to drive an 01 5.4L 4WD X. Granted this one has 250k miles. Holy crap what a dog! Won't even get out of its own way! You may as well just go out and buy a Chevy Volt!!!!
My first X was a 5.4 2wd with 3.73s and seemed fine... even towing I was happy with it. I towed a few cars on dollies, and my wife towed her Highlander (before we traded it in on a sweet Volt) on a tandem axle trailer with the X and Highlander both loaded full on our move from TX. to VA.
I have the v10 with 3:73's and towed my TT and car trailer around with no issues. Over mountains and rivers etc. It's not going to win any races, but you shouldn't be when towing. But the 5.4 barely gets out of it's own way in an F150, so...
Most of the 5.4 Ex's I've seen have been fleet and .gov vehicles. Alexandria, VA still has several in operation with various departments. I see a lot of them as Fire Chief vehicles in my travels.

For me, it didn't start pulling well until I got to about 80 or so, which is faster than I really wanted to go on some of the interstates I was on.
Below ~75 or so, it would slow down on any sort of incline and then suddenly kick down and speed back up. Not that great when you're in traffic, trying to maintain speed.
The slower I went the more it wanted to hunt for gears all the time.
But around 75-80 (about 2,500 rpm), it was much better.
This was towing a 16ft tandem axle trailer with two four wheelers. Me and two people and a bit of luggage.

Jon - the 5.4 was a gigantic hunk of crap, and you know it. 5-Star, Y-pipe, blah blah blah. Polishing a turd.
Anyone that gets up in arms about their 5.4 is cute. Yes, different strokes for different folks. Most of us went with PowerStrokes That and if the engine was such a great choice for the Excursion, people wouldn't get so pissy about them being made fun of. I can joke with these 6.8 guys about having spark plugs, but they can counter with a cheaper maintenance price.
Howdy
I do lawncare and am looking at an 04 Excursion 4x2 with a v8 / 93k miles. I would like a v10 but can get a great deal on the v8. I am sure the deal is because v8 are not as popular. I only haul a 5x8 trailer so I dont need a ton of power. With all the frequent stop /start of a lawncare route, I really have no need for diesel. Just wanted to see if anyone here has input of a v8 5.4 excursion being used similarly?
I happen to be looking at a 2004 5.4L Excursion today. I would rather a V10, but this one is a good deal, and only has 45,000 miles on it, it looks and drives great. I want to be towing my 29 foot trailer with it that weighs in at 5800 pounds dry. Daily driving duties would be really short trips, so a gasser is the answer, and the 5.4L would be best for that anyway. I just want to make sure it is up to the task of towing my travel trailer! Opinions?

Glad I have the V-10 with 4.30's!!!
