6.0 intercooler or not?

6.0 intercooler or not?
Ok I have a 6.0 intercooler setting in the garage. But my real question is it really worth putting it in? I have a late 99 with alum sides. I have read most the post out there and I'm still not sure about it. I'm all for droping the temps and I do some towing. Would like some input on this. Who has done it and what pros or cons do you have. Thanks Alan

I've done it. With the combo of my mods I can't even hit 1250 degrees at the track on a 1/4 mile drag strip run. Same time last year I was hitting well over 1400 with the stock intercooler and stock turbo. The intercooler alone is responsible for about 100 degree drop in EGT's (turbo swap and intercooler swap were 6 months apart, so I saw exactly what the differences were). If you plan to keep the stock injectors, the 6.0L intercooler is a great upgrade. If you are planning larger injectors in the future, then you might want to look at a different intercooler.

Just remember that the stock 7.3L intercooler has a 3.25 inlet, and a 3" outlet. The 6.0L intercooler has both a 3" inlet and outlet. When you get new boots, make sure they are the 3x8" ones. Also don't forget to pick up a new 3" boot clamp. The one for the 3.25" inlet will no longer work and the boot will blow off.
Have fun.

For a new in the box intercooler, you can find them for under $200 (I paid $160 plus shipping for mine). A used one can be had for under $100.

Mike, I bought mine off e-bay. Can't say it was the best deal. After a poor boxing job and a broken mounting tab. I think I would pay a little more and get a new one! I still need to get this one presure tested. I also want to do the ebpv delet when I put the intercooler in. No need of dumping oil into a clean intercooler. I'm looking for a 2qt tank with breather and drain to put by the rear end.Look up dieselpowerproducts they have new 6.0 intercoolers. Good luck. Alan

If I had it to do over again I would probably skip the 6.0 cooler and wait until I could afford a good one. I already had plenty of airflow and good EGT's.....the differences between the stocker and the 6.0 are so small it really wasn't worth the effort or expense for me.
I will note that I have not had the trailer loaded heavy yet, so there may still be some benefit that I've yet to see.
