Blinking is usually an alert that the problem is rather immediate, when they stay on steady it is usually just an emissions issue or slight misfire. Either way it needs to have the codes pulled ASAP and I wouldn't drive it a lot until you find out what the codes are.
Yah, you can clog them up or worst case start a fire. DO NOT continue to drive your truck in this condition.
One likely cause is spark plugs or ignition coils going bad. Had that happen to my truck, a coil went bad, resulted in that cylinder not firing, very characteristic sort of 'shuddering'. Cost $300 to get fixed, but it's a lot cheaper if you can do it yourself, new coil runs around $60-$80 - wish I'd been on these forums when it happened, because then I would have fixed it on my own. If you do want to do it on your own then get the codes read at Autozone or some such place, and look here for more info on how to do the fix.
P.S. For some reason the coils often fail at the same time - a month after the first one a second went bad, so be on the lookout for that if a bad coil turns out to be your problem.

Reason: inaccuracy
Summit racing has Accel cops' for $30 a piece.
It flashes when it is seeing a fault. If it sees it long enough, it will stay on solid. Have it scanned and we'll guide you in the right direction on getting it fixed.
Don't know off the top of my head, but someone at a parts store should be able to tell you if they use the same replacement part - and if they do, then yeah they should work.
