I have a 2002 52,000 miles, 6 cylinder 5 speed truck that I bought recently. It is very hard to get into gear when it is in neutral. The guy I bought it from said he just had some clutch work done on it and I think he had his slave cylinder replaced. He said his clutch pedal went to the floor so he took it in and had it fixed. Its been a couple of months since I bought it so I have to try to find his # again to find out what he had done. Anyway after reading all the posts about the slave cylinder going bad this seems to be what is happening to my truck. Why would I have these problems if he just had it fixed recently? Anything else to check? It shifts fine and the clutch feels perfect, it is just very hard to get it into gear once you are stopped in neutral. Thanks for the help.
Perhaps it needs to be bled.
Check the bellhousing area for any signs of fluid.
Also, to see if there is air in the system, try pumping the clutch 3 or 4 times before going from neutral to 1st. If it goes in smoothly, then there is air in the system that needs bled out.
With the Ranger and F-150 clutch and transmission systems sharing so much in common, this could be of help to you as well:
BE SURE TO KEEP THE RESERVOIR FULL!
When I bled my clutch, I operated the bleeder valve, my mom operated the clutch pedal, and my dad kept an eye on the reservoir. My dad watched as all the air came out through the reservoir. So try to get a third person to help if you can.
To bleed the clutch:
-With the bleeder valve closed, depress the clutch pedal to the floor.
-Slip your foot off the pedal and let it fly back to the top (DON'T be gentle).
-Repeat several times (5 is a good number)
-Depress the pedal to the floor, hold it there, and have a helper open the bleeder valve on the slave cylinder.
-Allow the fluid to run out.
-When the fluid stops flowing from the valve, shut the valve and release the pedal. Repeat as needed.
-Be sure to keep the reservoir full, a third person to watch the reservoir is a very good asset to have.
