all right guy's n gals i'm hoping you canhelp me out here . as you all know i'm drivin' the 53 flatty everyday and obviously encountering some issues along the way, such as runnin' hot occasionally , . but i digress , im having a heat soaked starter prob. the headers on the ol' girl literally are on top of it . i've tried heat wrap / sheild i had left over from a previous car , but to know avail . my question is does any one sell like a tilton mini starter or some heavy duty 12 volt unit to replace the ol' 6 volter ??? any answers are a help , and by the way i'm still wearin ' that sh-- eatin' grin !! drivin ' this thing is way too much fun !!!
yep they're all in place . i'll take a pic one of these years and post it but the passenger side header is damn near on tp of the starter , as a matter of fact the battery cable is routed over the top of the tube ! it's close . she's also having a wee bit of an problem with runnin' kinda warm , but we gotta remember she literally came out of the barn after a quarter of a century nap so she's gonna have issues to work out .
I have Red's headers and the Powermaster mini, not sure if it's the XS or what (bought it slightly used). Like MT, I'm curious that your pipes are that close. Both Fentons and Red's clear with quite a gap.
The mini-starters are wonderful! They don't say, but I assume you need to run 12v? One of these starters, an alternator, and a fresh 12v battery, you'll eliminate a lot of headaches! My old starter jammed twice and that was all I needed to know! A side benefit of these starters is that they hit the flywheel from the front, where (usually) all the flywheel teeth are fresh.
Note also that minor re-wiring is needed, they are kind of like a GM starter as far as the pull-in solenoid. (You could eliminate the firewall-mounted solenoid completely)
55 f350 try running 180 degree thermostates, and 2 cans of pro blends 40 below. I have worked my truck pretty good (check my gallery) this summer in 90 degree heat and the temp has not got hotter than around 190.
she's still lettin' go and givin' me fits . just today the left rear brake hung up . the wheel cylinder is pushing out but not retracting fully , bad "new" spring kit bad "new" wheel cylinder , master cylinder who knows i'm chasing my tail in circles it seems . f6 i had thermostats of 180 in her but i'm having really good luck with new stuff as one of them failed in the closed position upon initial firing . i'm still flushing the system out the more i do the more that comes out ! i moved the starter cable and there is just enough room maybe 1/2 inch between the header and the starter . i'm figuring that the ol' 6 volt starter is gonna take a dump on me as the truck is / was half butt by p.o. , converted to 12 volt . this stuff just happens i know and it's just gonna take time and when i'm at my wits end the help i get from all of the people here . if any of you are coming to the mother road festival here in springfield keep your eyes open for a beat up faded mettalic green and rust 53 and you'll have found me !! that's if we get her fixed by then !!
A new mini starter (got mine off of ebay) is a dream...not only will it spin the flatty over faster than the original starter ever could, it's maybe half the weight of the old starter, which means a LOT when you are on your back under the thing trying to hoist it into place.
