Can a tuner alter boost or just injection timing?

Injection timing yes. The critical question posed by altering said parameters is effect on EGT. If 1400F melts aluminum (the melting point of the metal by itself) then what happens to pistons and heads made out of aluminum that can be exposed to at least 1200 to 1400 for short times if the air/fuel mixture is running rich. An example might be here in Denver where the air is lean and your passing on a mountain with 12,000lbs in tow for an extended period at 90F ambient air. Without a Pyro, you wouldn't know if you are approaching that or for how long. A lack of boost would also do it and you would see black smoke if the fuel was pouring in without boost, but the soot and what not would be captured by the smog devices. Since Ford left out a pyro we have to assume the PCM would initiate defueling if it could detect high EGTs, or maybe it does it by looking at MAF and Boost and assumes a guesstimate of EGTs based on that and throttle position? It is fun to speculate but someone who really knows can tell us if we should worry about EGT in a non-tuned engine since the MFR didn't supply a gauge

I agree, this raises my consern about warranty faliures in a non-tuned engine, based on statements made in the 6.4 engine warranty book.

The only temp probe i know is the one after the particular filter used for the re-gen cycle. This is far from the engine so one would question how accurate it is to actual temps generated from the engine.
