Shifter linkage

I have a 68 f100 with a C6 automatic and on the columb shifter. Im over the hump on my Frame off overhual and need to address a problem with the shifter. Basicly the whole time Ive owned it you couldn't leave the thing running in park and get out. It will just drop/slip down into gear and since it is all low end it will start to drive. Almost got run over by it getting out to drop a video in the night slot one time. I tride to get a new colum from a scrap yard but it still had the same problem though slightly tighter.

So aside from installing a cable type floor shifter, can anybody here tell me how to correct the problem?
Is it just the linkage or the trans itself? Maybe both?

Thanks
John

Thanks, John
Below the steering wheel is the upper steering column flange. Screwed into the lower portion of the flange is the TRANSMISSION CONTROL SELECTOR POSITION INSERT also called a shift gate, or a detent. The end of the shift lever fits into this part. Constantly moving the lever out of park, has worn down the tab that holds the truck in park. Replace this part, the trouble should be over. The same part was used 1967/69 F100/350; all auto transmissions (C4/C6/Cruiseomatic). see note below

C7TZ-7A216-A .. Transmission Control Selector Position Insert

I do not know if any of the FTE suppliers like Blue Oval Truck parts, NPD or Dennis Carpenter carry this part, or not. If they don't, it's a junkyard item only. The part is no longer supplied by Ford.

The end of the shift lever may also be worn, but it can be welded, and hard chromed, and ground/filed down to the original configuration.

NOTE: If you change the shift lever to a 1970/72 type, you can also use the insert from 1970/72.

I just did a search of the three sites you provided as well as LMC and Auto krafters and no luck. I did request info on the Part # you gave as to weathe they carry the part or can tell me where to purchase them.
I 'll have to check the Factory Manuals I have out in the shop but I was unable to locate a picture of the insert on the web.
Thanks for the help
John

The insert is half moon shaped, about 2 inches long, with two bolt holes. It has cut outs = individual tabs for each gear shift position. It mounts to the bottom side of the steering column upper flange. Shop Manual = the picture of the flange and insert will be in the same picture as the steering column. Section 3000.

You have the factory shop manuals. You can buy the 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog on CD: hipoparts.com. Ford parts catalog illustration = Section 35; Page 8.

Still can't find the pic? I can scan the picture in the parts catalog and email it to you Tuesday evening. Email me off FTE, or p/m me your email address.

Section 3000 ???
I have the green manuals numbered 1 to 3 and theres no Section 3000. I think I understand what part your talking about though. Is it a half circle piece of sheet steel with 1/4" notches fanned around the outer circumference?
Please scan the picture in the parts catalog and email it to me so I know for sure?

Sorry for the pause in response but I just started a new Job and theres alot of ot.
Thanks
John
