From the transmission through the fire wall the linkage is fine, it's just below the steering wheel where the shifter attaches, is where the problem lies. I pull back the "cup" like piece and saw a piece of metal fall and the shifter is very loose and does not make the tranny shift. I can shift the gears by the linkage in the engine compartment easily. I wonder if any one can tell me where to get the shifter gear linkage that is around the steering cloumn.
Do you mean the little collar that the shifter is attached to? If so its all one piece.. I just went to the local parts yard and pulled one off for my 73 cuz I couldnt find a similar vintage. Un fortunatley to get the little buggers off youll have to cut the wires on the turn signal cam and then solder them back together when the new one is on.

I think it only put me back like 15 bucks and yeah after that all was well. All I had to do was shoot another coat of flat black on it cuzthe paint was kinda worn.

Ford originally called it a socket...but everyone I know calls it a shift collar. This fits below the steering wheel and the lever fits into it, the lever is held on with a roll pin. Be aware that there are upper and lower steering shaft bearings, also. bearing: basic number 3517 cup for bearing: basic number 3518. Get these too, you'll need them.
Original Ford Part number: C0DZ-7228-A
This number may have been updated, but the basic number (7228) remaines the same.

Note: You can pull the turn signal wires out of the plug (easy does it) tape them together with a piece of heavy string attached....pull the turn signal assy. out of the column. When you re-assemble the column, pull the string back down the column...the wires are now ready to plug back in.
This works on many car and truck applications for many years.
