1987 f150Starter is hanging turn switch off sitll engaging. I replaced the relay on firewall still wont help drained battery turning over. Can someone help.
Your solenoid is probably sticking. You can try hitting it with something to see if that is the probloem, but you cant really positively rule it out using that method. I would just replace the solenoid, theyre cheap enough. That happened on my 1984 F350 and the solenoid fixed it. Beware though, that if it continues to crank like that, you are still dumping fuel into the car without spark, so it can cause a dangerous situation.
I pulled my battery and gave it a full charge. When I replaced it the truck started right up no problem I then let it sit a short time and the starter got hung again could it be a bad cell in the battery causing this?
check the battery. and check the starter solenoid and Bendix. also check the wire that goes to the s terminal on the realy that you replaced to See that it is deactivating with the key off.
that would be the one marked with the letter s under the post. you need to look real hard it is molded in to the black plastic. I dont know if all of the aftermarket ones are marked the same . but that wire should only be hot while the key is in the start position. if it remains hot in the run or off position then you need to check the ignition switch lock mechanisms.
A weak battery won't cause a solenoid to close, but when you hit the ignition it can do a soft close which doesn't accurately seat, which alows it to stick.
