Reason: no engine size or year,
Sometimes if the battery is low, or the grounds are bad, or some other problem with the cables, the voltage is too low, and the current draw is too high, and the solenoid contacts weld themselves together, keeping the starter engaged.
With a good volt meter, preferably a digital one, check the voltage at the battery and report back. Then, with the volt meter still connected to the battery, start it and see what the voltage drops to as it's cranking.
Then, connect the + side of the volt meter to the cable AT THE STARTER, and the - side of the volt meter to the battery (-) and again, start it and see what the voltage drops to.
I had the exact same problem, turned out the battery was just good enough to crank it over, but the voltage was too low, causing excessive current through the solenoid and the contacts would weld themselves together.
Hitting the solenoid made it stop cranking. Does that work for you?
