starter hanging up

i have a 2002 f150 with the v6 an when i start it the starter will not disingage can anyone help?

your starter maybe on the way out....but you can try to clean it up. To do that you'll need to remove the starter, place it nose down and spray brake cleaner the shaft the starter gear rides on (this is what is suspected as gummed up...& not allowing the gear to slide back). Once that is cleaned up , then maybe give a couple sprits of lithium grease on the shaft for easy activation...or at least easier. Couldn't hurt to clean up the whole starter either...just blow it off with air or let it dry a bit before reinstall

This also allows you to then get better looks at wires and connection during the process. and once off you can take it to the local parts store and get it tested.
