Holding off on the intake until I get some info on installing the valley Pan set...had to pick up a new one, as the old one was getting destroyed while trying to get the gaskets off...I knew it'd happen...soaking the old one in solvent was just wasting time.
Wel...couldn't wait any more...decided to make an excutive decision. Put it together as I would a SBC, goop around the water jackets on both sides of the valley pan thing, and goop on the china walls (both sides. Why Ford didn't just use a pan that bolted to the bottom of the intake and make it simple, I dunno...
So, intake is on and engine is about done...ooops...should I put the lifters in now?
Need tofigure out what to do with the rocker arm studs, then move forward....I'm thinking (for cost) I'll go with the Summit welded tip PushRods, one piece are too expensive for us.
Well. Fine then. I just got home from working on the project truck and dug around in the shed till I found the studs, and here my opinion...screw 'em in and run 'em! Mine are tight too, just as I remembered. Couldn't screw 'em into a head by hand more than about 2 threads, and the same with trying to screw a nut onto 'em.
Also...I'm not sure about these heads but certain SBF heads have the stud holes through into the water passages so be sure to stick a wire or something into them to see if they bottom out or not, and if they do go into the water passages, don't forget to use thread sealer on them...
Well...poop! Looks like i odered the incorrect Oil Pump...seems I ordered the Melling 84D, not the Melling 84...the 84D takes a different pickup on it...a bolt on one...grrr...the wait is on.
Keep at it .. Let the force be with you. ;-) I'm in the middle of a 454 build. It never goes as smoothly as we would like it to. It's a trial in patience that is for sure. Just like the girls, these motors can be finicky at times.
I'm doing a 6.9 diesel right now. The heads turned out to be cracked, pulled another set from the truck this motor's going into, they were cracked as well. I found a decent set yesterday and did a valve job on them, now it's time for some cleanup and painting and hopefully this thing will be ready to go back in next week. It does indeed seem like there's always something...
