New engine build thread:)
I too have a box of electric fuel pumps so between us we should be able to come up with something useable, although I like the idea of replacing the diaphragm and contacts since those are items that go bad with age. I see no reason not to use one. You can even get a mercury switch to shut of power to the pump in case of a rollover. I suppose we could use a stock-type Ford inertia switch, but I think we'd have problems with it triggering and killing the fuel pump whenever the truck takes a good jolt...
Little update on the engine..
Timing cover came in today so I picked up a WaterPump at Autozone and buttoned the front back together...UPS just stopped by, pretty sure it's the oil pump from Summit, so will be able to get it in and get the pan welded up and on tomorrow for sure.
I went ahead and picked the heads back up today, and used my steel cutters for the seats, cleaned them up very nicely...was reading the info on the box, and they're made for crystalized valve seats...anyway, a few swipes and now all the seats are done...even fixed a nick or two done by the dimwit who hogged them out

Have to do some wiring on the valve grinder though...then will touch up the valves, lap them in and wait for the springs to get here. Should have a longblock by the end of the week

Also, I put the eccentric back on...check the 385 forum...seems another guy with a 77 460 has the same setup we do and has near 200K on his without issue...so, I put the eccentric back in...just in case we ever need to put a mechancal pump in it.
I just knocked the oil tube out of the old cover and put it in the new cover..I didn't measure things, but just seated it...another thing to keep in mind after we fill it with the proper amount of oil, we need to double check the level on the dipstick in case there's a difference in the front covers.
ANyone know before I start grinding?
I coould pull valves from the D3 heads we have and compare.
Wouldn't have concerned me at all, except not all were the same.

ONce clened up, all but one or two of the valve, look BRAND NEW. In fact it looks like they were just lapped in.
I might just use my little hand cutter with a carbide bit and face them off...they look so good...there were one or maybe two intake valves that had a few pits from where the rust was setting on them, unsure how they'll cut...but should be able to scrounge them from the other set of heads if needed, pretty sure the valve are the same in both sets.

Do I need to soak this thing and fill it before I install it?
Thing is, as I can tell, there's no way to prime the pump once installed, since the pump drives off the cam...not the dizzy like a GM engine.
Also...about the lifters....
Normally what I do with a SBC is pump them full of oil...install them, then adjust one set at a time, which allows the excess oil to bleed from the lifter when I rotate the engine...then do the next one, etc...
So when I fired the engine, i don't have to worry abouy a pumped up lifter ending a pushrod.
Now with this engine if I were to do the same thing..i/e pump the lifters full of oil, and just bolt the PR's and rockers down...I'm thinking that it's apossibility that when I spin the engine over, we might have a problem or two.
SO how do you guys with non-adjustable valve trains do it?

I have to look it over, but thought there was no gear on the dizzy that dale took, so I assumed it was like the L6 Dodge I did awhile back.
Hey,
weird thing,
The factory cut on the intake valves were 45*'s, spot on, I cleaned all the faces on ther intake valve with the little tool I showed you while you were here a few weeks back...little "hand lathe" thing.
Exhaust valves have a different cut...was thinking 46*'s...but actually looks more severe...can't use my hand cutter on them.
Wonder why that is?
EDIT:
BTW, both intake and exhaust seats were both cut at 45*.
