New carb linkage problem

I just put on an edelbrock performer manifold and the holley truckavenger 670 on the 351W. The stock throttle cable linkage doesnt quite work. I was wondering what others have done to remedy this or make it work.

What's the problem? Not long enough? Too tall? I have about 4 turns left on my linkage with a 5.0,stealth, 470 TA. If it's short you can go to a lokar throttle cable or you can try bending the bar at firewall.

The link that comes from the pivot that bolts to the manifold that goes to the carb is about 2 inches too short. Does the lokar cable replace the whole mechanical set up? That is something that I might be interested in. I tried messing with the stock linkage for an hour or so I couldnt seem to get it to work out.

You could put a longer piece of threaded rod on the pivot. The lokar cables replace the whole shootin' match. They go from the pedal to the carb and are cut to lenght. BC Bronco's stocks them. Maybe summit racing too.

I am leaning towards that option. Where would a guy find a longer piece of threaded rod at? I was snooping around the parts stores and no one stocked much for that type of stuff. Is that a universal kit that you cut to length or comes cut to length?

JamesDuff.com used to carry a bellcrank and throttle rod kit for use with the 351W. I'm not running a 351 but on my 302 with AOD had to do away with the stock linkage that bolted to the intake manifold. Came off the firewall bellcrank with a threaded throttle rod assembly as found on many Ford trucks in the later 70's direct to the carb, much simpler than stock.

Here is how I made the throttle on my 351W work.

Got the parts at Summit:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0&autoview=sku
http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...700+0&x=21&y=5

I had to shorten and add some threads to the linkage, as well as put an "S" bend in it.

I really like the way that turned out plus its much cheaper than an aftermarket cable assembly. How do those ends stay on the shaft though?

They thread on to the shaft, which makes them somewhat adjustable.
The ball joints bolt onto carb linkage and to bellcrank.

To cut the shaft at the right length did you have the carb at the idle position and the linkage in the Ilde position and cut to match?

Yes.
Just make sure that you don't cut it so short that you can't adjust the idle screw back out without the linkage being too short.

As a side note, make sure you have a good return spring. Nothing worse than a wide open throttle that won't return.
