I'm swapping a 79 front end into a 65. I'm swapping everything but the steering linkage.(79 linkage is broke) my question is will my 65 linkage work with the swap or do I have to source another 79 linkage. I'm posting in the 65 forum too. In case someone has gone through this before. Thanks guys.
More questions... manual or power steering? What does the "front end" of the 79 swap include??? Be specific and thorough. There was an engineering change for the pitman arm in mid-71 and it changed the angle of the centerlink for PS.
One thing to check off the bat is the tie rod stud's thickness on the 65 and insert it into the 79's spindle arms.
First, PNs are different and steering linkages are dimensionally different through the range of 65-79 F100s. It depends on the combination. The way the linkages are bent/contoured are also different because of this.
Second, check the overall width of steering arm holes btwn the 65 and 79. The 65 may not have enough adjustability because the 79's spindle arms (disc I assume) may be in a different relative position compared to the 65 (drums I assume).
Great reply silver, Thank you. And I'm sorry for the lack of details. My wife will get this truck eventually. So we're upgrading from standard drums and steering to power discs and steering box and manual to automatic from a complete 79. We are swapping everything except the center link. Thanks for the help. I'm picking up some parts from a guy tomorrow that has a 79 centerlink. I didn't want to buy it if I didn't need it.
