Steering linkage interchange

I'm swapping a 79 front end into a 65. I'm swapping everything but the steering linkage.(79 linkage is broke) my question is
... will my 65 linkage work with the swap or do I have to source another 79 linkage. I'm posting in the 65 forum too. In case someone has gone through this before. Thanks guys.

What parts are you specifically referring to when you say linkage?

Are you going from manual to power steering?

I think it's called the centerlink,. Has the tie rod looking things on the end. I'm switching from standard steering and drums, to power steering and discs. Manual 6 cyl to an automatic 302. The 79 centerlink is unusable. I still have the 65 centerlink and was wondering if it'll work. They look similar with a few slight differences.

I think you need to keep the linkage with the steering box.

The good news is that center link should not be hard to come by.

Chase on all the swaps that I have worked on we found good donors, dropped the complete I-beam set dragged it under the receiver and bolted it up using all parts. Nothing not used, the 66 in my back yard is all 76.

Been awhile, fairly certain I was not able to use any of the steering components from the 65 with that of the 76, to include the 'pitman arm'.

Ditto! Why put old tierod ends under your truck only to replace them down the road? Not to mention the safety factor. I just swapped in disc brakes and ordered 1973 F100 centerlink, inner and outer tierod ends. I used Moog Problem Solver parts. Prices were great and I have a nice and tight front end that will last many years.

When doing a dics swap on a '65; your tapered ends of tierods won't be long enough to pass through the disc spindles and still get the castle nut on. You would have to grind 1/4" off each spindle to get the '65 linkage to fit. Stock '65 wheels will not fit over disc brakes either. JMHO

P.S. I was able to use my '66 pitman arm.

Been here long enough to note that when a problem arises it mostly is from mix & match, never from complete axle set swaps.

Good information, makes sense. To tell the truth I've been catching a lot of crap(in good nature) down at the shop. I was the one that cut it off the old one thinking it's a part better bought new. They will leave something on purpose that needs zip cutting until I get there because I'm now the expert.

I installed all new '73 steering linkage under my '66 when doing disc swap. The stock pitman arm worked with newer components.

I would not question it, especially considering this is one ole timer who's ability to recall is somewhat suspect. Can't even remember when I completeted the upgrade, had to be at least 12 yrs. ago. Anyhow, appreciate the information, probly prevent another FTE member from purchasing an item they don't need. Again, thank you.
