Got a 2000 ranger with a 3.0 liter, a few weeks back it died on the highway, had it towed and the shop said it had water in the gas, they changed the fuel filter and cleaned the mass air flow sensor? It ran fine for a week or so and then died again, this time just for kicks when the tow arrived I tried to start it and it started right up and ran fine. Took it back to the shop and they said it was still the effects of the water, code was "fuel composition". So they sent me on my way again, this time it ran great for 4 days and died on Monday, towed it to a Ford dealer (I was out of town) and they said it was a "water getting into tbs connector" code so they cleaned the connector under the seat)? Still has the flex fuel code, but is running again. I afraid to drive the dang thing too far, think it's solved?
Well after spending $450 at shop 2, it died again tonight on the way home. I was desperate to save on another towing bill so I unhooked the neg cable from the battery and waited 10 - 12 minutes, hooked it back up and it fired right up and got me home before the check engine light came back on, but it was still running fine when I got home. Any ideas would be most appreciated, I'm running out of cash, spent almost a grand on towing and "repairs" and it's the same as it was before.
If trouble code P0176 is not caused by a bad harness connector as per the TSB, then it usually points to a faulty flex fuel sensor, which unfortunately, aren't cheap.
The flex fuel sensor is mounted directly underneath your driver's seat on the left frame rail. It connects up to a wire harness that mounts to the frame rail on a plastic bracket.
P.S. You ought to spend the 100 bucks a year and get a Triple A premium membership. Stop getting whacked by the tow companies every time a problem arises.

I've seen a few of these trucks with that code set (hope mine never goes bad).. but I have yet to see one not run because of it. Are you sure the dying and the code is related? Was your check engine light on before it started dying?
Sometimes it's easy during diagnostics to assume the symptom is related to the code.. so you can easily get focused on that fact, when sometimes it can be something completely different...
the light came on as it started to miss, or chug, then it died, the guy at the shop said it was severly flooded. He changed the plugs, and oil (had fuel in it). He said something about having to turn off the fuel pume to keep if from flooding at first. I am trying to get it to do it again so I can see if the reset (unhooking the neg cable) was a fluke. thanks for all the info so far.... someone else suggested a fuel pump relay, where is that located on a 2000?
Any one know of a good source for a flex fuel sensor? Also, where is the fuel pump relay on the 2000 with a 3.0 liter.
thanks for all the info! What a great site, once I get this problem tackled I may give the door ajar switches a try.
I'd try searching eBay and the internet in general, I've seen the FFV sensors going for cheaper then what you'd pay at a dealer. Check out some local junkyards while you're at it.
As for the location of the relay, check your owner's manual. If you need one, you can get an online version (PDF) from here:
