Trailer Brakes

I am (trying) to install a Prodigy brake controller and I am having a hard time finding the wiring harness? I have installed controllers on my former Expedition and Explorers but I am having a hard time finding the harness. Can anyone give me some advice on where it might be on an 03 Excursion 6.0L 4x4? Thank you.

Just did it on an 03 v-10. The existing plug located in the dash is pointing toward the sky, at about the same angle as the lower sloped part of the dash. The plug is located about 2 inches to the passenger side of the seam between the panel at your knees, and the panel below the radio. It is about 8 to 10 inches upward from the bottom of the dash panels. Good luck!

Hello, I just installed break controller today on my 2002 EX. It took about 20 min. remove the fuse access panel under the steering wheel lay on the floor and look up and towards the center of the dash. the plug is located behind a white hose like thing that that goes to the small vent sensor on the dash. The plug is facing the rear of the truck mounted to a metal dash support. Good luck

I took the excursion to pepboys because Ford was closed to see if they had any idea. They pointed to some wires and said the harness was cut off. There are 6 wires a blue, red, black, and white-ish (could have been brown, looks faded), that are larger (dont know what gage) and 2 smaller striped ones near the parking break? Do you think that would be it? I am going back to the garage to see if I can see what you guys are looking at. Thanks again for you help!

You guys are awsome..I found it. I do have to say that it was a pain to get too!! I did have one issue, when my fat hands was weaving the wire through some wires, I hear an electrical "pop". It sounded like when you put jumper cables on a fresh battery. I looked around and nothing was on fire but I may have shorted something out? How would I check that? Do I just wait to see whats not working? Thanks again for your help!

You might have a short somewhere in the trailer wiring and it may have popped a fuse. Check your manual and find out which fuses are for trailering and check each one. If it pops again when you insert a new fuse, you definitely have a short somewhere.

BTW - those loose wires you saw are provided by Ford as a courtesy to help wiring anything through the firewall. You'll find the opposite ends near the brake booster inside the engine compartment.

The wires that PEP Boys showed you were the Customer Access Wires. They are there for your use to route wiring through the firewall. The other end of those wires is on a harness in the engine compartment, just below the drivers side hood hinge. The wires are taped to the harness.

As far as the electrical pop, Check your fuses and hope you did not pull any power wires out.

Did you plug in your pig tail and let the bare wire ends touch together? because once you plug into the connector under the dash the wires are hot!!

It was some other wire behind the panel. I purchase the pig tail so both ends were in a harness. I have to wait until I hook up the travel trailer to see if it was a trailer fuse. I think I just have to wait and see whats not working?!

Behind the panel is a mess of wires. I think it is to the Ford Alarm that I chose not to pay $700 for when I bought the vehicle. There is a sensitivity sensor and many spliced in wires. I had to sign a form that I did not want the alarm. Next time I am at the dealership I will have them tell me what it is.
