Front brakes work fine, but they make a terrible screeching sound just as I come to the end of the stop. I replaced pads and rotors early last fall, they clearly are not worn, all my driving is local/city, and the new pads/rotor probably have no more than 2k miles on them. I confess that I did not replace with top-shelf equipment but still used quality mid-range parts from NAPA. Any suggestions how to correct this? It seems to be getting worse with time. I'll install new pads if I must.
NB: I have a known bad VSS on one of the front wheels (already replaced the VSS on the rear-end which did not correct the problem) and get the ABS engaging just at the end of the stop. But I do not think this is related to the brake screech.
Usually due to a small pebble getting stuck in the pad, so it grinds on the rotor. Most of the time they work themselves out, but I have heard of times when the guy just took the pads off and cleaned it out.
Do you remember if your pads had a backing shim on them? Alot of times the lower end pads dont have this. The purpose of this is to help deaden vibrations, thus deadening screeching sounds. When i do brakes i spray the back of the pads with "brake quiet" which is also supposed to help absorb some of the vibrations. I never have a problem with noise now. I also know some guys use RTV as well.
Yes, I installed the backing shim / spring clips. Plus I applied brake grease to the pad slides. I have not heard of brake quiet. I am certain that by now any gravel would have been thrown out. Do you think the screech results from a vibration instead of inferior pad material?
My wife had a car that was screeching also, I thought it was time for new brakes. After getting into the disk in front and the drums in the rear everything seemed fined. I took some sandpaper and scuffed up the surface of the rotors and the drums and took the glaze off, after that the screeching went away. Just something you might look into trying.
I have the noise also and the pads are one of the better NAPA pads with shims. I tried the brake quiet spray on mine and it helped some but still didn't eliminate it all together. The rotors are new as well and have tried cleaning bothe the pads and rotor as well but it doesn't help. The NAPA pads must be a harder compound than the original equipment pads and maybe that contributes to the noise problem.
I think if I am going to the effort to remove the pads for any scraping or cleaing, I am just going to replace the pads with something other than NAPA. I assume any other brand of pads will work with my near new NAPA rotor. I may try scuffing the rotors first to see if that helps. Thanks for the responses.
When i do brakes for people or myself, I always get the Wearever golds from advance auto. I put the wearever silvers on my truck without shims or brake quiet, and they squeek every once in a while, but I really dont care. But for everyone else I buy the wearever golds (come with backing shims) and spray brake quiet on them. No squeeking on our 94 ranger or my moms 98 caravan, or any other vehicles i've done so far.
