I own a 96 ford f250 with a 7.3 turbo diesel. When I start it up in the morning it puffs grayish white smoke for about 2 to 3 seconds then it quits and thats it till the next morning.
What is the grayish white smoke just after I start it????????
sorry, I couldn't resist. I don't think it is abnormal, as long as it snaps to life, instead of rolling to life. Your truck is at its most inneficient time when you crank for the first time of the day. Engine is cold, and as dry as it is going to get fuel is cold. Unless it is not starting good don't worry.
You more than likey have 1 weak or bad GP. When a GP gets weak it doesn't get hot enough to burn all the fuel in that cylinder, white smoke is the results but clears up as soon as that cylinder fires a few times. It's nothing to worry about but if the cold start get slower or the engine chugs longer then new GP's may be in your future.
Yeah a voltmeter or test light, there are four Under Valve Cover plugs two per head, unclip the plugs(the last one on the Drivers side you need to take the intake apart) and then hook the test light to the pos battery cable. There are 5 pins in the plug the first and last are glow plug pins touch each one with the test light, if the light comes on you are good, if it does not come on your are bad. An ohm meter, one side to ground the other to the pin is more accurate, as you may be able to see a plug that is starting to go bad, i.e. higher ohm reading than the other plugs, where it would still turn the test light on--in theory--. Also chech the pins and the female plugs for any sign of corrosion or burning, and this could affect the issue also.
