wife started up the truck tonight at work,pulled on to the hwy! runnunig fine then theres a loud KNOCKING sound comming from under the hood,with enough smoke comming out of the tail pipe to close down the hwy! zero visability thats how bad it smokes! and knocks bad too i had to go get her so i started the truck wasnt easy to do! any ideas? ps had it towed home dont need broken windows too!

 

Who filled it up last. Sounds like gas. Check oil level and see if your loosing oil. Make sure your burning diesel.

 

i fueled it with diesel! now iam talking knock as in rod! this is loud!

 

also had to hold down the pedal to keep it running!

If the turbo has failed (bearings shot, wheel hitting outside) then you will have no compression resulting in lots of smoke and now power.

 

how do i check that? grab hold of the turbo shaft and see if theres any play in it?

 

Pretty much--yep. If there is a lot of play? It'll be a lot of noise--and if it's dumping oil/coolant into the exhaust stream? Lots of smoke.

ok i was able to get to my turbo wheel tonight! when i grabed the shaft and tried to move it back and forth it didnt move,but if i go up and down or left and right i get some play in it, very small tho! so what ya think?

 

Did it spin free? If it is the turbo making the noise it should be hitting something.

 

yes it spins free with no noise!

 

Have you tried to crank and run it? If so where is the knocking coming from?

 

you will have about .001 to .002 up and down side to side play in the wheel..but no more then that..the oil will tighten it up when its running... sounds like you have some thing in the bottom end that let loose...
